MATCH RESULT – MIDDLESBROUGH TO WIN
Boro were very good at home during the 21/22 season, winning 14 of the 23 league games at The Riverside. I fancy them to edge this contest on Saturday. West Brom’s away form was poor, losing more than half of their games on the road, and that stat will need to be much better this year if they are to bounce back to the Premier League. Both sides have made new signings who will look to have an immediate impact, and I think Boro’s summer has been a very strong one. They’ve signed a decent young striker in Marcus Forss from Brentford, and some seasoned Championship players in Darragh Lenihan from Blackburn Rovers and Tommy Smith from Stoke City. Zack Steffen has arrived on loan from Premier League Champions Manchester City to cement his position between the sticks as their Number 1. I think the fact that their home form is so good, and their positive transfer window, will mean that they bag all 3 points at the weekend and get off to a dream start in their bid for promotion.BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE – YES
Whilst I think Boro will be hard to break down this season, I do fancy both teams to score in this fixture. West Brom have made some decent signings themselves in Jon Swift from Reading and Jed Wallace from Millwall. They will be reliant on these two providing for their strike partnership of Karlan Ahearne-Grant and Daryl Dike this year, therefore I’m confident that both sides will find the net on Saturday. Boro failed to keep a clean sheet in 48% of their home fixtures last term, whilst West Brom scored in every 1 in 3 league games last year on their travels. I think The Baggies will be more ruthless this season therefore this selection has to be added to Saturdays Bet Builder.PLAYER SHOTS ON TARGET – OVER 0.5 – MATT CROOKS (MIDDLESBROUGH)
I’ve tried to look for value away from the obvious selections in this match, and I think powerhouse midfielder Crooks definitely provides that. He bagged 10 league goals last season, which is an impressive return for a midfielder. His play reminds me of the one and only Frank Lampard (without the same ability of course). He tends to arrive into the box late on the scene, picking up on scraps and loose balls. He will look to winger Marcus Tavernier to provide him with plenty of opportunities once again this season, and I think he will get a few decent chances to find the net in this fixture.PLAYER SHOTS ON TARGET – OVER 0.5 – JED WALLACE (WBA)
Similarly to my previous selection for the Bet Builder, the obvious shot on target tips for West Brom would be centre forwards Ahearne-Grant and Dike to have a shot on target. Wallace, however, is a winger with an eye for goal who won’t be afraid to have a pop given half a chance. He notched up six league goals for Millwall last term, as well as 12 assists. If you’re not familiar with some of Wallace’s strikes, take a look at some of his goals in recent years. He has scored some worldies, including free-kicks, and I expect him to be West Brom’s dead ball specialist this season. I really fancy him to at least hit the target and test Steffen in the Boro goal.Middlesbrough vs West Bromwich Albion Bet Builder Tip
- Middlesbrough to win
- Both teams to score
- Matt Crooks over 5 shots on target
- Jed Wallace 5 shots on target
