How We Build Our Bet Builder Tips

Every bet builder tip on this page goes through the same process before it reaches you. We start with the match data — recent form, xG (expected goals), shots on target averages, and head-to-head records. We then look at the lineup news and assess which markets are most likely to land based on how both teams play.

The most important part of any bet builder is finding correlated selections — markets that are more likely to occur together than the bookmakers’ combined odds suggest. For example, if a team averages 8+ corners per game and concedes frequently from set pieces, combining corners over with both teams to score is a stronger play than picking them independently.

We cover all the major markets: anytime goalscorer, shots on target, cards, corners, BTTS and result. For a wider look at our football betting analysis, see our football tips hub and our football accumulator tips.

What is a Bet Builder?

A bet builder lets you combine multiple selections from the same match into a single bet. Unlike an accumulator — which spans different games — everything in a bet builder happens in one fixture. That means you’re not relying on five different results going your way across the weekend. You’re focused on one game and all the things you think will happen within it.

You might bet on a player to score anytime, the match to go over 2.5 goals, and a specific player to be shown a card — all in the same 90 minutes. The bookmaker calculates the combined odds instantly. The more legs you add, the higher the odds — and the bigger the return if it lands.

Bet builders go by different names depending on where you’re betting. Here’s a quick reference:

How to Place a Bet Builder

The process is broadly the same across all bookmakers. Here’s how to do it step by step:

  1. Open the app or website and go to the match you want to bet on
  2. Look for the ‘Bet Builder’, ‘Build Your Bet’ or ‘#YourOdds’ section at the top of the match
  3. Start selecting your markets — goalscorer, corners, cards, total goals, BTTS and more
  4. Your betslip will update automatically with the combined odds as you add each leg
  5. Enter your stake, check the potential return and place your bet

Bear in mind that some selections are classed as ‘related contingencies’ and cannot be combined. For example, you can’t bet on a player to score and the same team to win to nil in the same builder — they conflict. The bookmaker’s system will flag these automatically.

Bet Builder Markets Explained

Here are the most popular markets used in bet builders and what to look for when selecting them.

Anytime Goalscorer

The most common bet builder leg. Pick a player to score at any point during the 90 minutes. Focus on players with high xG, plenty of shots per game and good recent form rather than chasing big names. A striker averaging 4+ shots per game at home is more reliable than a marquee player going through a dry spell.

Shots on Target

A popular market because it’s easier to predict than a goal. Check a player’s average shots on target per 90 minutes over the last 10 games. One shot on target is usually priced around 4/5 to evens — reasonable value in a bet builder rather than as a standalone bet. Remember: a shot blocked by an outfield player before the line does not count as a shot on target with most bookmakers.

Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

Our both teams to score tips are published separately, but BTTS is a natural fit inside a bet builder for open games where both sides have leaky defences. Look at the last six away games for the visiting team — if they’ve scored in five of them, BTTS has a strong case. You could also combine BTTS with a team win, which makes up a both teams to score and win bet. Our BTTS win guide explains exactly how this type of bet works in football.

Total Goals (Over/Under)

Over 2.5 goals is the most commonly backed total in bet builders. It works best in games between two attacking sides where neither team is sitting deep. Check xG data for recent fixtures rather than just the scoreline — some games feel like they should have more goals than the result suggests.

Corners

Corners markets work well in bet builders because they’re rarely correlated with scoreline in a way that gets flagged as a related contingency. Teams with high possession and an attacking full-back on one side tend to generate corners consistently. Over 9.5 corners is a solid leg in Premier League games between top-half sides.

Player to Be Booked

Card markets require careful selection. Look for midfielders or defenders with at least 3 yellow cards in their last 10 league games who are facing a quick attacker or playing in a fixture where the referee tends to dish out early bookings. Avoid picking full-backs against pacey wingers — bookings usually come from last-ditch fouls later in the game rather than early challenges.

Bet Builder Strategy – How to Find Value

The biggest mistake most punters make with bet builders is stacking too many legs. A 10-leg bet builder might be priced at 100/1, but the probability of all 10 landing is minimal. Our tips typically run to three or four legs — enough to get to interesting odds without destroying your hit rate.

Here’s what our tipsters focus on when building a bet:

  • Correlation — do the legs make sense together? If you’re backing a team to dominate possession, back corners to go high too
  • Avoid conflicting legs — don’t back a player to score anytime and the same team to lose. The bookmaker will refuse it or it’ll simply not make logical sense
  • Check the team news — a bet builder with a goalscorer who starts on the bench is dead before kick-off
  • Use stats not reputation — recent xG, shots and card data matters more than a player’s name
  • Shop the odds — the same four-leg bet builder can vary by 2/1 or more between bookmakers

Using Free Bets on Bet Builders

Free bets are ideal for bet builders because you can take a shot at longer odds without the risk. Most of the new betting site offers and sign-up bonuses can be used on bet builders directly. Here’s how to get the most from them:

  • Use sign-up free bets on a 3 or 4-leg bet builder at 10/1+ — if it lands the return is significant, if it doesn’t you’ve lost nothing
  • Check whether the free bet stake is returned — most aren’t, so the real return on a £30 free bet at 10/1 is £300, not £330
  • Look for bookmaker-specific bet builder boosts — Boylesports and bet365 regularly offer enhanced odds on pre-selected bet builders for big weekend fixtures
  • Reload offers and existing customer promotions are worth checking before placing any bet builder

Bet Builder Rules – What You Need to Know

Rules vary between bookmakers, but these are the most important ones that apply across the board.

What counts as a shot on target?

At bet365 and most major bookmakers, a shot on target requires the ball to be heading into the goal and either saved by the goalkeeper or entering the net. A shot blocked by an outfield player who is not the last defender does not count. Crosses that end up in the net are counted as goals, but may not always be logged as a shot on target — data providers have discretion on this.

What happens if a player doesn’t start?

If a player you’ve selected as an anytime goalscorer doesn’t start and doesn’t come on as a substitute, most bookmakers will void that leg and settle the bet on the remaining legs at revised odds. Check your bookmaker’s specific rules — a few will void the entire bet builder if a key selection doesn’t play.

What is a related contingency?

A related contingency is when two selections in a bet builder are logically linked in a way that inflates the probability of both landing. For example, betting on a team to win and the same player to score anytime — if the player scores, the team is more likely to win. Bookmakers flag and block these combinations automatically.

What if a match is abandoned?

If a match is abandoned before 90 minutes, all bet builder bets are usually voided and stakes returned. This applies regardless of how many legs have already settled. Always check your bookmaker’s match abandonment rules before placing.

Bet Builder Tips – FAQs

How many legs should I include in a bet builder?

We recommend three to four legs for the best balance between odds and hit rate. Two-leg builders rarely get to odds worth taking, and five or more legs become very difficult to land consistently. Our daily tips are typically three or four legs priced between 8/1 and 20/1.

Are bet builders better than accumulators?

They’re different rather than better or worse. Bet builders let you go deep on one match — which suits punters who’ve done detailed research on a specific fixture. Accumulators spread your risk across several games but require multiple results to land. Many punters use both. See our football accumulator tips for comparison.

Can I cash out a bet builder?

Yes, most bookmakers offer cash out on bet builders. The cash out value will change as legs settle — if your first two legs land and you’re waiting on the third, the cash out value will be significantly higher than your original stake. Not all bet builder bets are eligible for cash out, so check before placing.

Which league is best for bet builder tips?

The Premier League offers the deepest market range with the most reliable data, making it the best league for bet builder research. The Champions League knockout rounds are also well-covered. We publish tips for the Championship, La Liga and Serie A too, particularly for big TV matches.
