1:55 Cheltenham

The opener on ITV on Trials Day is a handicap chase over the intermediate 2m4f trip.

The one for me is MAGIC SAINT (5/1) NB. He ran a cracker last time out finishing 4th in a competitive handicap here at Cheltenham on New Years Day and this sounder surface wk suit a lot more than the soft ground he encountered that day. He’s a previous winner here at Cheltenham and he sits prominent which will suit round this track over this trip.

2:10 Doncaster

The 2:10 from Doncaster comes up next and it is a Mares Hurdle Grade 2 contest over 2m.

The selection here is ANNA BUNINA (4/1). She made a pleasing enough seasonal return last time out when finishing 5th behind Champion Hurdle hope Tommy’s Oscar at Musselburgh. She is sure to improve from that effort and the quicker ground here will suit her well. The Irish always have to be respected when making the trip over here and she is no different in this weak contest.

2:30 Cheltenham

It’s Grade 2 action next from Cheltenham. The Cotswold Chase over 3m and can provide the odd Gold Cup clue.

I expect CHANTRY HOUSE (4/5) to win this. I’m happy to draw a line through his King George effort as he was never travelling and struggled with the fast tempo. He will be well suited by this return to Cheltenham being a previous winner round here. They are likely to go a slower pace than they did Boxing Day and this field lacks quality. Should be winning.

2:45 Doncaster

The 2:45 is the Albert Bartlett Don Novices Hurdle, a Grade 2 race over 3m.

My selection here is MY BOBBY DAZZLER (5/2) NAP. He has relished the step up to 3m and has shown improved form for that step up. He was an impressive winner at Aintree two starts ago bolting up by 21l before running well at Cheltenham on New Years Day. This return to a flat track will suit and I think he’ll prove tough to beat. Another weak enough contest.

3:05 Cheltenham

The feature comes up at 3:05 and it is the Cleeve Hurdle, a Grade 2 for the staying hurdling division over 3m.

My selection has to be CHAMP (1/2). He relished the return to hurdles when winning the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Newbury on his last start. He’s only ever lost twice over hurdles and he’s a horse full of talent. He is a proven stayer over 3m where his market rivals arguably need either 2m4f or 4m. He has to be tough to beat here.

3:20 Doncaster

The 3:20 from Doncaster is a competitive renewal of the Sky Bet Handicap Chase ran over 3m.

The one I’ve landed on here is DEMACHINE (8/1) EW. A consistent sort who ran a cracker on seasonal return when finishing fifth in the Ladbrokes Trophy. He was always going to

Improve for that effort and was well fancied last time out but unfortunately he came down at the first. However, that’s left his mark unchanged for this and with Kevin Brogan take a further 3lb off he looks sure to go close. He likes the race prominently which I like in a race of this nature, especially on drying ground round a track like Doncaster.

3:40 Cheltenham

The finale on ITV comes up at 3:40 and it is an addition of the Ballymore Novices Hurdle, ran over 2m4f.

The one I like here is HILLCREST (11/8). Unbeaten over hurdles winning 3 from 3 he is likely to get his own way in front again here. He won here at Cheltenham on New Years Day showing his talent jumping well and finding a lot for pressure to win going away. He’s likely to prove a tough nut to crack again here I feel.
