One of the early kick-offs in match day one sees newly promoted Wrexham, with millionaire Deadpool owners at the helm, travel to face Southampton, who were relegated from the Premier League last season. Southampton v Wrexham Predictions

Southampton to win: We’re backing Southampton to take all three points at home this weekend. They have a very good squad for the Championship, and start the season as second favourites for the title at 5/1 behind 3/1 favourites Ipswich Town. Wrexham have a decent squad, and obviously plenty of money, but I don’t think they are strong enough to be competing for promotion just yet. They find themselves 28/1 to win the league and 6/1 to be promoted. I think the Saints will come out on top this weekend and are rightly favourites to do so.   Both teams to score: That said, it’ll be a close game with both teams keen to make an impression in the league opener. Both have decent attacks, and will create plenty of chances. I’m backing both teams to score here, as I think will be the case in more games than not in a fiery weekend of Championship football. That selection is added to our bet builder at 5/6.   Ryan Hardie to have 1+ shot on target: I’m backing former Rangers and Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie to have one or more shots on target this weekend. He scored 10 goals in 37 Championship matches for a struggling Argyle side last season, with 12 in 40 the season before. Wrexham will create chances, and I think he’s good odds to get at least one of them on target.   James McClean to be carded: My final selection is a yellow card for James McClean – a man perceived by many opposition fans as the villain. He likes to wind fans and players up, gets stuck in, and never shies away from controversy. He was booked 11 times in League One this season, and will be up for it on his return to the Championship, a league where he was booked nine times for Wigan Athletic in the 2022-23 season. He’s good odds for a booking here.
