Oxford vs Sunderland Preview – 29/10/2019 EFL Cup

Oxford have looked imperious in recent weeks and Karl Robinson’s men have climbed up to fifth in the table. Although Peterborough are leading the way when it comes to goalscoring in League One, the Yellows aren’t far behind with 32 goals in their opening 15 matches. They struggled during the opening few weeks, but they’ve gradually found their shooting boots and have netted exactly three goals in each of their last five home matches.

The fans have had plenty to shout about the Kassam recently and they will be hoping to see their side book their place in the fifth round of the competition on Tuesday night. They are ten games unbeaten coming into this contest and will be feeling supremely confident of getting one over on their inconsistent opponents.

Phil Parkinson hasn’t been in a hotseat for long, but the former Bolton boss had already seen his side suffer defeat on the road. Fans were delighted to see their team go for broke at the Stadium of Light seven days ago although they’ll be concerned about their sides lack of penetration on their travels. The Black Cats struggled to break a stubborn Shrewsbury outfit on Saturday and will need to buck up their ideas if they have any hopes of reaching the next round.

Matches between these sides usually end all-square with each of the last four finishing level. The last three meetings alone have each ended 1-1.

Injuries Hitting Hard

Both managers are likely to make changes for this tie, although they could have their hand forced by injury. Sunderland will be without Lynden Gooch whilst goalkeeper Lee Burge is unlikely to feature after picking up an injury in midweek.

For Oxford, Chris Cadden could be fit enough to feature although he may be rested and given time to fully recover ahead of the weekend. The biggest blow for the hosts is the absence of Cameron Brannagan who could be set for a few weeks on the sidelines. He’s been instrumental this season and it’s a big blow for Karl Robinson.

This side will give both sides the opportunity to test out some fringe players.

Can Sunderland Break Down Oxford?

Sunderland have failed to score in each of their last two away games as they’ve come up against obstinate opposition. Wycombe and Shrewsbury are not easy to play against and the Wearsiders found it tough to create clear cut chances throughout those games.

Although Oxford have rightly received the plaudits for their attacking play this season, they have been effective at the back at the Kassam. They haven’t conceded a home goal since the end of August and they’ve shipped just three goals in their last eight matches. It might be tough for the visitors to find a way through. They will have to be creative in the final third in order to find a way past the excellent Simon Eastwood.

Unstoppable Yellows

Although this will be much tougher than their 3-0 victory over Rochdale, Oxford should have enough to book their place in the fifth round. They are scoring for fun and their defensive record (particularly at home) is exceptional. They are a decent price to win this game inside 90 minutes, but we’re taking the safer option and going for Draw No Bet on the hosts.
