World Cup Tips: 27/1 Acca from FIVE World Cup Qualifying Matches on Thursday

We are nearing the end of the group stages of the European World Cup Qualifying campaign, with some nations looking to book their place at the World Cup in Qatar next year.  

We’ve had a look at the more crucial games on Thursday evening and have pulled together an Acca that we’ll be going for.

Georgia v Sweden – 17:00

Sweden can take a huge step towards winning Group B with victory in Batumi against Georgia. And they’ll know they’ll need to win with a visit to Seville next week to face Spain in a game that will surely decide who wins the group and qualifies for the 2022 World Cup without having to go through the lottery of the play-offs.

The Swedes have suffered just one defeat in their qualifying campaign, a surprise 2-1 loss in Greece. However, they have won their other five games including a 1-0 defeat of Georgia in March.

The pressure will be on Sweden to win the game and maintain their lead at the top of the group, and we think they will, but it won’t be easy.

Russia v Cyprus – 17:00

Four wins in a row has seen Russia take top spot in Group H, moving two points ahead of Croatia going into their last two games. The Russians will be very confident of beating bottom side, Cyprus, in Saint Petersburg on Thursday, to maintain their lead at the top of the group. And they’ll need to win ahead of their trip to Split next week to face the Croatians in a game that will determine the automatic qualifiers from Group H.

We’re predicting a big win for the Russians to set up that huge game in Split on Sunday.

Malta v Croatia – 19:45

The 2018 World Cup Runners-up, Croatia, were in pole position to qualify automatically as the winners of Group H, before a surprise 2-2 draw at home against Slovakia in Osijek last month.

That result saw Russia leapfrog them, so the Croats now travel to the Taquil National Stadium to face Malta knowing they need to win to set up that big game with Russia in Split next week.

Croatia’s only defeat in their qualification campaign came on the road in Slovenia, but they did beat Malta 3-0 at home when the sides last met.

Malta were beaten 4-0 by Slovenia when last in action at the Taquil National Stadium, and a similar fate could await them against Croatia.

Greece v Spain – 19:45

Spain are still in the hunt to win Group B, but they must first win a tricky looking tie in Athens against Greece on Thursday. If they do win, it sets up a huge game in Seville next week against group leaders, Sweden.

However, a draw could see Spain having to settle for a play-off place if the Swedes beat Georgia on the same night, whilst a win for Greece will put them one point behind Spain with a game to go.

That should mean for an open, attacking game with both sides needing to win. When the nations met in Granada in March, Greece secured an excellent 1-1 draw and they also beat Sweden 2-1 at home in September. This won’t be easy for the Spanish and a draw could be the outcome – a result neither side would want.

Ireland v Portugal – 19:45

Cristiano Ronaldo will lead his side to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Thursday knowing a win or draw will see them go top of Group A ahead of their crucial game against current group leaders, Serbia.

The Portuguese have been far from impressive during this qualifying campaign, despite being unbeaten, and will count themselves fortunate to have beaten Ireland when the sides met in Faro in September.

Ireland were on course to win that game and keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive, but Ronaldo popped up with two goals in the 89^th and 96^th minute to break Irish hearts.

With Ireland now unable to qualify, the impetus is on Portugal to get a result and we can see them winning relatively comfortably.
