How Many Teams Are in the World Cup 2026?

For the first time in history, 48 teams will compete at the World Cup — an increase of 16 from the 32-team format used since 1998. This expansion means a record 104 matches in total, up from 64 in Qatar 2022.

The New Format Explained

  • 12 groups of four teams — each team plays three group matches
  • Top two from each group qualify automatically for the Round of 32 (24 teams)
  • Best eight third-placed teams also qualify — making 32 total
  • New Round of 32 replaces the old Round of 16 as the first knockout stage
  • Teams must now win five knockout matches (not four) to lift the trophy
  • The tournament lasts 39 days — the longest in World Cup history

The expanded format is significant for betting. With 32 teams advancing from the group stage instead of 16, third-place finishes now carry real value, and the quality gap between the best and worst teams is larger than ever — creating more chances for group stage accumulator tips to land. For an analysis of how to play the expanded format, see our how to bet on World Cup underdogs guide.

The 2026 World Cup Groups

The group draw took place on 5 December 2025 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. All 12 groups for the 2026 World Cup are confirmed:

World Cup 2026 Winner Odds

Spain head into the 2026 World Cup as the betting favourites after winning Euro 2024. England are best priced at a standout 15/2 with PricedUp, with France, Brazil and defending champions Argentina completing the leading group.

Netherlands25/1Group F. Dangerous outsider.

Odds correct at time of writing. Prices vary between bookmakers and change frequently.

Why Spain Are Favourites

Spain arrive as reigning European champions after beating England in the Euro 2024 final. Under Luis de la Fuente they have the deepest squad in world football, with Lamine Yamal — still a teenager — already among the best players in the sport. Pedri, Rodri and Nico Williams complete a settled, system-driven side. Group H with Uruguay, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia looks navigable. At 9/2 the market has them correctly placed as favourites.

Why England Are 15/2 Value

England are best priced at 15/2 with PricedUp — meaningfully bigger than the 6/1 available with most UK bookmakers, and the standout England price in the market. Thomas Tuchel has rebuilt the defensive structure, England qualified without dropping a point, and Group L against Croatia, Ghana and Panama is the kindest draw of any major nation. Full analysis is in the England section below.

The Chasing Pack

France at 5/1 have attacking depth no other nation can match, and this is confirmed as Deschamps’ final tournament. Brazil at 9/1 under Carlo Ancelotti finally have the tactical discipline to match their talent. Argentina, also 9/1, remain dangerous through the 2022 core, though a title defence with Messi at 38 is a tall order. Portugal at 12/1 and Germany at 16/1 complete the contenders — Jake Gray rates Germany the favourite most likely to disappoint, see our Germany flop predictions.

England World Cup 2026 Odds & Preview {#england}

England are 15/2 with PricedUp to win the 2026 World Cup — the standout price in the UK market, with most bookmakers going 6/1. Thomas Tuchel’s side are among the leading contenders to end 60 years of hurt.

England’s Group L Fixtures

All three England group matches are at UK-friendly evening kick-off times:

FixtureDateKick-Off (UK)Venue
England vs CroatiaWednesday 17 June9pm BSTAT&T Stadium, Dallas
England vs GhanaTuesday 23 June9pm BSTGillette Stadium, Boston
Panama vs EnglandSaturday 27 June10pm BSTMetLife Stadium, New York/New Jersey

For full kick-off times and England’s path through to the final, see our World Cup 2026 fixtures page and our UK TV guide.

England’s Squad — Key Players

Harry Kane is the most important player in the squad — England’s all-time leading scorer with 78+ goals, the 2018 Golden Boot winner, and England’s first-choice penalty taker. Jude Bellingham is the X-factor in midfield (wearing the No 10 shirt for the second consecutive tournament), with Bukayo Saka, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon giving Tuchel arguably the strongest attacking quartet in the tournament. Jordan Pickford remains the first-choice goalkeeper.

There were some surprises in Tuchel’s final World Cup squad, with both Phil Foden and Cole Palmer left out of the 26-man squad, alongside Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw. For the full confirmed squad and likely starting XI, see our England World Cup 2026 squad numbers page.

Betting on England at the World Cup

Key England betting markets:

  • England to win the World Cup: 15/2 (PricedUp), 6/1 (most bookmakers)
  • England to reach the final: around 14/5
  • England to reach the semi-finals: around 8/5
  • England to win Group L: 2/7 favourite
  • Harry Kane England top scorer: 1/2 favourite

For our full breakdown of England’s chances, each-way strategy and the standout 15/2 price, see our England World Cup 2026 odds page. For the full Group L analysis covering Croatia, Ghana and Panama, see our Group L preview.

Scotland World Cup 2026 Odds & Preview {#scotland}

Scotland are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998 — a 28-year wait ended by a dramatic 4-2 win over Denmark in November 2025 that saw them top their qualifying group. For the Tartan Army, this is enormous. For bettors, there is real interest in how Steve Clarke’s side perform.

Scotland are 250/1 to win the tournament — realistic only for the most optimistic punters — but there is genuine value in their group stage markets.

Scotland’s Group C Fixtures

FixtureDateVenue
Scotland vs Haiti13 June 2026Foxborough, USA
Scotland vs Morocco18 June 2026Foxborough, USA
Scotland vs Brazil23 June 2026Miami, USA

Scotland must beat Haiti — their opening fixture is essentially a must-win if they are serious about progressing. Morocco are formidable (World Cup semi-finalists in 2022) but beatable. Brazil is a mountain to climb, but if Scotland have already qualified with two wins, a creditable performance against the Seleção could still see them through as one of the best third-placed teams.

Scotland World Cup 2026 Betting Markets

MarketOddsBookmaker
Scotland to win World Cup250/1bet365
Scotland to qualify from Group C4/11SpreadEx
Scotland to win Group C12/1bet365
Scotland to beat Haiti2/5bet365

Scott McTominay is Scotland’s standout player. The Napoli midfielder has been one of Serie A’s best performers since leaving Manchester United and is the heartbeat of Clarke’s side. His goals, leadership and energy will be crucial. Andy Robertson at left-back brings Premier League quality and experience. Che Adams leads the line.

Scotland are priced as long-shots, but value exists in markets like “Scotland to qualify from the group” and individual match betting, particularly the Haiti fixture.

World Cup 2026 Dark Horses

Every World Cup throws up a team that goes further than anyone expected — Morocco reached the semi-finals in Qatar 2022, Croatia reached the 2018 final as 22/1 shots. The expanded 48-team format opens the knockout bracket up further. Jake Gray has picked three outsiders with a realistic route to the semi-finals.

Jake Gray’s Dark Horse Picks — To Reach the Semi-Finals

TeamOddsJake Gray’s Verdict
Morocco10/1Strongest of the three
Norway11/2Haaland-led, 8/8 in qualifying
Senegal20/1Longest price, AFCON pedigree

Morocco at 10/1 are Jake’s strongest dark-horse pick. The 2022 semi-finalists have lost just once in two years, with an elite spine of Achraf Hakimi, Sofyan Amrabat, Nayef Aguerd and Noussair Mazraoui — and the belief, post-Qatar, that they can beat anyone.

Norway at 11/2 won all eight qualifiers, scored 37 goals and finished ahead of Italy. Haaland scored 16 of those goals, but Jake stresses they are not a two-man team, with Martin Ødegaard, Alexander Sørloth and exciting wingers Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb adding depth. Senegal at 20/1 are the longest price of the three — AFCON champions in 2022, with the experience and squad depth Jake believes will reward a deep run.

For Jake Gray’s full dark-horse analysis, see our Three Outsiders Who Could Reach the 2026 World Cup Semi-Finals article.

World Cup 2026 Each-Way Betting Tips

Each-way betting is one of the best ways to find value in the World Cup outright market. Most bookmakers pay each-way on the top two in the winner market at 1/2 the odds — always check the terms before placing.

Jake Gray’s dark-horse picks above double as each-way plays. Morocco at 10/1, Norway at 11/2 and Senegal at 20/1 to reach the semi-finals are the markets he rates — backing a deep run rather than an outright win, which is where the genuine value lies for nations outside the favourites.

For each-way Golden Boot picks at bigger prices than Kane and Mbappé — including Lautaro Martínez at 25/1 and Ollie Watkins at 33/1 — see our World Cup 2026 each-way top goalscorer tips. For the broader strategy on backing outsiders at major tournaments, see our how to bet on World Cup underdogs guide.

World Cup 2026 Golden Boot — Top Goalscorer Tips

The Golden Boot goes to the tournament’s top scorer. It is a volume market — the winner is almost always a player whose team goes deep. Our World Cup tipster Jake Gray has analysed the market and picked five players, with Harry Kane his number one selection.

Jake Gray’s Golden Boot Tips

PlayerCountryOddsJake Gray’s Verdict
Harry KaneEngland7/1 (BoyleSports)Top pick
Kylian MbappéFrance6/1Favourite
Vinicius JrBrazil25/1Each-way value
Mikel OyarzabalSpain16/1Outside chance
Erling HaalandNorway14/1Wildcard

Jake Gray’s top pick is Harry Kane at 7/1 with BoyleSports. England’s all-time leading scorer carried his outstanding club form into qualifying with eight goals in eight matches, and with England expected to go deep from a kind group, Jake expects Kane to be among the leading scorers. Kane is also two goals behind Gary Lineker as England’s all-time World Cup top scorer — see our World Cup top scorers of all time page for the historical context.

Kylian Mbappé is the market favourite at 6/1 — France create a huge volume of chances and Mbappé is the focal point — but Jake places him just behind Kane. Vinicius Jr at 25/1 is Jake’s each-way value pick, with PricedUp paying five places on World Cup top scorer each-way bets. Mikel Oyarzabal at 16/1 and Erling Haaland at 14/1 complete the five.

For Jake Gray’s full Golden Boot analysis on all five players, see our World Cup 2026 top goalscorer tips.

How to Bet on the World Cup 2026

New to betting on major tournaments? Here is a quick guide to the main World Cup betting markets and how each one works.

Outright Winner

The most popular World Cup bet. You back one nation to win the tournament outright. Bets are placed before the tournament and settled after the final. The longer you wait to place your bet, the shorter the odds become as the field narrows. Backing early offers bigger prices; waiting until the tournament is underway gives you more information but shorter odds.

Each Way

Each-way bets pay out on the winner and the second place (typically one or two places, sometimes more on the Golden Boot market). Ideal for backing teams like Norway or Senegal at bigger prices where an outright win is unlikely but a deep run is possible.

Group Winner

You back a nation to finish top of their group. These markets offer better odds than the outright winner market while still requiring just three group stage matches. Strong favourites like Spain, France, England and Argentina are short to win their groups but offer more value than the outright winner price. See our World Cup 2026 group winner odds page for every group favourite.

To Qualify from the Group

A step down in risk from group winner — you just need your chosen team to finish in the top two or be among the best eight third-placed sides. Popular for backing mid-tier nations like Norway, Colombia or Scotland.

Match Betting

Backing the result of individual games — home win, draw or away win. Becomes available closer to the tournament once match fixtures and kick-off times are confirmed.

Both Teams to Score

Both teams must score at least once. No concern with the result. Popular for group stage games between attacking nations. Group stage fixtures to watch for BTTS value include France vs Norway (Group I), Brazil vs Morocco (Group C) and Spain vs Uruguay (Group H).

Correct Score

Predict the exact final score. High risk, high reward. A 2-1 correct score in a major knockout tie typically pays 7/1 to 10/1.

Bet Builder

Combine multiple selections from the same match — such as a team to win, a player to score, both teams to score and a corner line. Dedicated bet builder articles will be published for every England and Scotland match, plus the major knockout ties.

Golden Boot / Top Goalscorer

Which player will score the most goals in the tournament? Settled on goals, with assists as the first tie-break. See our Golden Boot section above.

Accumulator

Combine multiple match or outright results into one bet. All selections must be correct. The standout pre-tournament accumulator is the 12-fold group winners — backing all 12 group favourites returns around 206/1 at AK Bets, the best price across the UK market. See our World Cup 2026 group winner odds page for the full breakdown.

How to Watch the World Cup 2026 in the UK

Every match of the 2026 World Cup is free-to-air in the UK on BBC and ITV. England’s three group fixtures are split between ITV (Croatia and Panama) and BBC (Ghana), with all three at UK evening kick-off times. Past World Cup Winners

Only eight nations have ever won the FIFA World Cup in its 92-year history. The 2026 tournament will be contested by twice as many teams as the first edition in 1930 — but the trophy has never strayed far from the usual suspects.
