Sheffield Wednesday vs Wigan Prediction & Preview: Latics Miserable Away Form to Continue

Sheffield Wednesday betting tips

Sheffield Wednesday were unable to move into the top two in midweek as they suffered a narrow defeat at the KCOM. Can Garry Monk ensure his side bounce back from that setback?

Wigan picked up a 1-0 win against Birmingham at the DW on Tuesday, with the Latics continuing to do their best work at home. Can they get a rare away win on Saturday afternoon?

Sheffield Wednesday vs Wigan Preview – 05/10/2019: Championship

Kieran Westwood described his side’s defeat as ‘a little dose of reality’ on Tuesday with the Owls slipping up against a decent Hull side. Garry Monk had pretty much made the perfect start to life in the Hillsborough hotseat although it’s back to the drawing board for the former Birmingham boss. Worringly, Sheffield Wednesday barely created anything in that game, and a number of players including Adam Reach came in for plenty of criticism on social media.

Wednesday are hard to beat, and they have got a fairly settled back-line with Julian Bornier and Dominic Iorfa combining well in recent weeks. They did miss the experience of Steven Fletcher on Tuesday night, although the experience Scot could return to the side for this fixture.

Wigan were back to winning ways in midweek, picking up their third consecutive clean sheet at the DW in the process. Paul Cook’s men are incredibly tough to beat in Lancashire, yet they just cannot seem to win on the road. They were defeated 2-0 at Craven Cottage last weekend and have netted just three times on their travels.

Their victory over Brum was described as ‘a little lucky’ by Paul Cook, and they will have to be at their very best to get anything from this tie.

Sheffield Wednesday Need to Use the Width of the Pitch

Against Middlesbrough, Garry Monk identified that the Teessiders would struggle with the aerial bombardment however that is unlikely to work here. Both Charlie Mulgrew and Cheyenne Dunkley are proficient in the air, and they will defend crosses all day long.

Both Antonee Robinson and Nathan Byrne have been busy in recent weeks, but neither of them completely convince defensively. With Adam Reach and Kadeem Harris out wide, Wednesday can really put pressure on the full backs and make it a difficult afternoon for the pair.

They may have to be patient, but it should pay off.

The Home Defence Could be Key

Despite playing under two different managers this season, Sheffield Wednesday’s home form has remained fairly constant. The Owls have played just four times at Hillsborough, and have conceded just three times. They restricted Fulham to just a single goal, whilst Barnsley also failed to score here in the South Yorkshire derby.

Although Tom Lees is soon to return to the side, Monk may find it difficult to split his central defenders up. The pair have been assured in recent weeks with just three goals conceded in their last four matches.

Wigan will need something special to unlock the home side’s defence. Under 2.5 Goals is a very attractive looking Evens with Bet365. It would have landed in three of Sheffield Wednesday’s four home matches.
