Manchester City vs Aston Villa — Prediction: 3-0
Merson always saw this as City’s easiest run-in fixture, expecting Villa to still be celebrating their Europa League triumph. With Villa’s season complete after a top-five finish and the European trophy, he doesn’t expect them to take the game seriously. He praises Unai Emery, now a five-time Europa League winner with three “Villa”-named clubs. The match marks Pep Guardiola’s final game in charge of City — Merson is sad to see him leave, calling him a legend who revolutionised the game. He ranks Guardiola the number one Premier League manager ever.
Brighton vs Manchester United — Prediction: 2-1
Merson views this as a massive game for Brighton, who could still snatch Champions League qualification if results elsewhere fall their way. United, having already sealed third place and a Champions League return, have nothing left to play for. Merson doubts they will match Brighton’s intensity — and with the World Cup approaching, he expects players like Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha to avoid exerting themselves and risking injury. He backs Brighton to win given they have far more to play for, while hoping Bournemouth slip up elsewhere on the same afternoon to keep their European hopes alive.
Fulham vs Newcastle — Prediction: 2-2
Merson expects goals here. Newcastle, two points behind Sunderland, want to finish above their rivals and have every reason to play open, attacking football. Fulham are no pushovers at home, so he’d be disappointed by a goalless draw. He doubts Newcastle can repeat the dominant display they produced against West Ham last weekend. Merson calls this a very hard game to predict. Everton have been strong away from home recently and he expects them to play without fear, which could trouble a nervous Spurs side. He notes Everton’s front four has the quality to hurt Tottenham, and recalls how anxious Spurs looked against Leeds after conceding an equaliser. He expects a nervy Sunday atmosphere that the players will feel. Ultimately he backs Spurs to hang on for the draw they need to avoid relegation — though he doesn’t see them as a top-six side next season.
Liverpool vs Brentford — Prediction: 3-1
Merson expects Liverpool to win and finish the season on a high at Anfield, giving fans hope to cling to. He is critical of Mohamed Salah, caught in a storm over inappropriate social media comments before his farewell game — Merson thinks Salah can’t complain if dropped to the bench and expects exactly that. He praises departing Andy Robertson as an outstanding servant and floats a possible Tottenham move. He expects Bournemouth to settle for a draw unless Brighton are leading Manchester United, since their European hopes hinge on results elsewhere. To catch Liverpool they’d need a big goal-difference swing; their realistic route to the Champions League is retaining sixth place by hoping Villa lose and Liverpool win. He calls Champions League qualification a potential incredible achievement and fitting send-off for Andoni Iraola, predicting a draw that would guarantee sixth even if Brighton win.
West Ham vs Leeds — Prediction: 2-1
Merson was scathing about West Ham’s display against Newcastle, calling it bordering on shocking. Who is Paul Merson?
Paul Merson was one of the best footballers of his generation and is best known for his time at Arsenal, where his magic feet and fantastic ability earned him the nickname ‘The Magic Man’.
