Mick Fitzgerald is one of the most recognisable faces in British horse racing broadcasting – a former Gold Cup-winning jockey who has been a pundit on ITV Racing since 2017. He occasionally shares his views on ITV Racing’s Opening Show and during major festivals, but he no longer regularly publishes tips columns or produces weekly content for Paddy Power or other platforms.

If you are looking for daily horse racing tips from a named pundit, the pundits below are actively publishing selections each week.

Active Horse Racing Pundits – Tips Published Regularly

  • Matt Chapman Tips – publishes tips for every ITV Racing day via Paddy Power News. Most prolific of the active tipping pundits.
  • Ruby Walsh Tips – publishes weekly tips via Paddy Power News throughout the National Hunt season.
  • Tom Segal Pricewise Tips – the Racing Post’s Pricewise column. Weekly selections plus ante-post tips for the major festivals.
  • Kevin Blake Tips – weekly Kevin Blake Take column on At The Races and Betfair Betting Podcast.

For today’s horse racing tips from our own team see our NAP of the Day and ITV Racing tips.

Who Is Mick Fitzgerald?

Michael Fitzgerald was born in County Wexford, Ireland on 10 May 1970. He rode over 1,250 career winners as a National Hunt jockey and compiled one of the outstanding records of his era before a serious neck injury sustained in a fall at Exeter in 2008 ended his career at the age of 38.

His most celebrated victories:

1996 Grand National – Rough Quest, trained by Terry Casey. One of the most celebrated Grand National victories of the decade.

1999 Cheltenham Gold Cup – See More Business, trained by Paul Nicholls. One half of an extraordinary Gold Cup day.

1999 Queen Mother Champion Chase – Call Equiname, also trained by Paul Nicholls. Fitzgerald won two Grade 1 championship races at the same Cheltenham Festival in a single afternoon – a remarkable achievement for any jockey.

1999 King George VI Chase – See More Business, completing a historic triple for the horse across the season’s three most prestigious staying chase prizes.

For much of his career Fitzgerald was retained by trainer Nicky Henderson at Seven Barrows – one of the most powerful National Hunt yards in Britain – riding for the yard in the major races throughout the season.

Fitzgerald as a Broadcaster

After retiring in 2008, Fitzgerald moved into broadcasting. He joined At The Races as a pundit before making the move to Channel 4 Racing in 2013, where he became a popular member of the presenting team. When ITV took over free-to-air horse racing coverage in 2017 Fitzgerald was among the first confirmed for the new team, where he remains a familiar presence.

Beyond broadcasting, Fitzgerald is a genuine insider in the sport. He spends time at Nicky Henderson’s Seven Barrows yard advising on race tactics – a continuation of a relationship built across his riding career. He is also involved with the British Racing School, coaching young aspiring jockeys on technique and attitude. He lives in the Lambourn area of Berkshire, at the heart of British National Hunt racing.

While he no longer produces regular tipping content, his occasional views on ITV Racing – particularly during the Cheltenham Festival and Grand National week – are worth noting. His experience of riding at the highest level in National Hunt racing, including 14 Cheltenham Festival winners, gives his analysis a depth that is difficult to replicate.
