Keep up to date with the latest ITV Racing tips ahead of the next round of coverage from Ed Chamberlin and the team with our preview and betting tips for the live races to be shown on ITV1 or ITV4.
Every weekend, the ITV Racing team cover the best Saturday afternoon racing from around the UK and Ireland and during the most important horse racing meetings such as the Cheltenham Festival, Aintree Grand National, Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the Guineas, there will be additional ITV Racing coverage on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We will also have the occasional Sunday covered by the ITV Racing team.
Latest ITV Racing Tips for Sunday 7th December
Sunday afternoon features a bumper ITV Racing programme with nine scheduled races being shown live across three of the day’s meetings.
Spearheaded by Huntingdon’s Grade Two Peterborough Chase, the cameras will also be in action north of the border at Kelso for the Borders National. Also weighing into Sunday’s televised action is Cork where the Grade Two Hilly Way Chase heads up their card.
Ed Chamberlain and the team will be on hand with expert tips and analysis and we take a race-by-race look at Sunday’s TV racing line-up.
1:15 Huntingdon – Sky Bet Handicap Hurdle (Challenger Two Mile Hurdle Series Qualifier) Cl3 (3yo+ 0-125) 2m
HAA’S BOY (4/1) comes into this in good fettle, and while this is a step up in class for the Diamond Boy gelding, the eight-year-old could prove up to the task.
Chester Williams’ charge is 2-2 since joining the yard and having cheekpieces applied, scoring over fences at Newton Abbot on his reappearance before doubling up over the smaller obstacles at Exeter last month, beating Dirty Den readily despite a last flight mistake.
That win has drawn a 5lbs rise in the weights, but he has been competitive off this mark before and he’s a former C&D winner as well as having shown ability to handle softer ground. He does have more on his plate stepping into a Class 3 now, but if he can continue his current good spell of form then he can give a good account of himself and it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see him in the mix again.
1:30 Kelso – Paxtons For Kverneland Parts And Genuine Spares Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl3 (4yo+) 2m7½f
I AM MAX (5/1) made a near race-ending mistake early at Carlisle when last seen, but Sandy Thompson’s charge is given another chance, having won the time before at Hexham, where he narrowly got the better of Florida Dreams.
The Vendangeur gelding struck by a head there having idled in front, but it was far too soon in the race at Carlisle to judge whether he’d gone close when he almost crashed out at the third fence. That bad error knocked the stuffing out of him and it wasn’t a surprise he never got involved after.
He steps up in trip for this latest outing which ought not to pose any issues as he got this far over hurdles and he had reopposing King Of Answers behind when striking at Hexham. He could be happier going back left handed and still with potential for better over the larger obstacles it might be worth forgiving that Carlisle effort.
1:45 Huntingdon – Sky Bet Build A Bet Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl4 (4yo+ 0-110) 2m7½f
DE KINGPIN (11/4) didn’t shape too badly on his seasonal reappearance and chase debut at Ffos Las back in October and Ben Pauling’s charge could well build on that experience.
The Kingston Hill gelding won over hurdles around this time twelve months ago but largely struggled otherwise to make much of an impact, and he shaped as if he’d be better for his run when finishing fourth of eight runners at Ffos Las on his return to action.
That was a better race than this and the handicapper may have made an error in dropping him 3lbs for that effort, given the winner ran well in an even better contest at Newbury next time. Placed in a point-to-point, he could have more to offer as a chaser and with this step up in trip likely to suit him he could take advantage of the drop in class to get off the mark now over fences.
2:00 Kelso – Bruce Farms Scottish Borders National Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl3 (4yo+ 0-140) 4m½f
DIAMOND DEALER (7/1) is 2-2 since joining Dan Skelton and assuming the Diamond Boy gelding gets this extreme trip then the six-year old can land the hat-trick.
Fairly lightly-raced as a hurdler for Ben Brookhouse, he has taken the switch to chasing in his stride and following wind surgery ahead of his chase and stable debut he got off the mark in this sphere at this venue in October, beating Cosmic Blizzard. He made all that day and showed a determined attitude to land the victory and he followed up with a nine-length’ defeat of The Big Reveal at Chepstow last month.
That was an impressive victory, although the form perhaps isn’t all that special and a 7lbs rise will make life tougher in this stronger race; while he’ll find it much more difficult to dominate from the front over this marathon distance.
Nevertheless, he could have more to offer as a chaser and with Tristan Durrell able to take off a handy 3lbs he could feature at the business end if seeing out the trip on the likely softer ground.
2:15 Cork – Joe Buckley Construction Stayers Novice Hurdle (Grade 3) (4yo+) 3m½f
KALYPSO’CHANCE (13/8) has to give away upwards of 6lbs to this field, but Gordon Elliott’s charge should nevertheless prove a tough nut to crack.
The Masked Marvel gelding won twice in bumpers last term and took in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival, finishing down the field behind Bambino Fever and he was no match for the same rival in the Punchestown equivalent in April.
He did shape well on his hurdling debut at Down Royal at the beginning of November on his reappearance, finishing runner-up, and he duly showed the benefit of that experience at the second attempt with a defeat of The Big Clubman in the Grade Three Monksfield Novice Hurdle.
A further step up in distance could unlock more improvement in the five-year-old who could go well with no fears over the ground.
2:37 Kelso – Richard Landale Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl2 (4yo+) 2m1f
MATATA (9/2) ought to find this a bit easier than the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham last month and Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge can go one better in this race than twelve months ago.
The Vadamos gelding finished runner-up behind reopposing Nells Son in this last year, beaten a neck, and although worse off at the weights now he can overturn that form. He had won at Cheltenham the time before and quickly got back on the winning trail at Windsor before stepping back into Graded company at Newbury.
Better for his return at Cheltenham in October he was third to L’eau Du Sud when last seen last month, although he’d likely have finished second ahead of Jonbon had he not made a mistake at the last fence.
Back in a handicap he’ll need to shoulder top-weight and he’s 3lbs worse off with Nells Son from twelve months ago. However, he has time on his side and could have more improvement being only a seven-year old so a big run wouldn’t surprise.
2:50 Cork – BAR 1 Betting Hilly Way Chase (Grade 2) (5yo+) 2m1f
ENERGUMENE (9/2) could be worth chancing to make another winning return, given his impressive record fresh and the veteran can lower the colours of stablemate Majborough who steps into open company for the first time.
A winner of this race twelve months ago following a lengthy layoff, he showed himself still to be a high-class performer despite advancing years when chasing home Jonbon at Ascot although he was disappointing when sent to Cheltenham for the Champion Chase before rounding off his campaign at Sandown in the Celebration Chase where he finished third.
His record on his seasonal bow is exceptional however, unbeaten in all but one run following a break of 50 days or more and he’s 3-3 here with all three victories coming in this race. While he’s not getting any younger and taking on classy rivals the likes of Majborough, Found A Fifty and Banbridge he can nevertheless make his presence felt with another big performance in a race he has claimed as his own in recent years.
3:00 Huntingdon – Sky Bet Peterborough Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m4f
Just the five runners and DJELO (4/5) can mount a successful title defence, having won this twelve months ago.
Venetia Williams’ charge beat the classy Protektorat in this last year and he showed stamina for further when beating reopposing Hitman at Newbury in February in the Denman Chase prior to finishing seventh at Cheltenham and sixth at Aintree respectively in Grade One company.
The Montmartre gelding will strip fitter for his reappearance victory over Pic D’orhy in the Charlie Hall Chase last month where mistakes three out and at the last probably robbed him an easier success. The drop back in trip will present no problems and effective on a range of ground of conditions he looks the one to beat on these terms.
3:15 Kelso – Humes Outfitters Handicap Hurdle Cl3 (3yo+ 0-140) 2m
GIBBS ISLAND (5/1) was never competitive in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham last month, but taking a step back down in class could see the Iffraaj gelding back on the scoresheet.
Tom Lacey’s charge is still lightly-raced over hurdles, but he won twice last term before finding himself out of his depth in Grade Ones at the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree before a break. Having made a winning return in a handicap at Chepstow in October he finished well-beaten back at Cheltenham latest, never better than mid-division in what was a hugely competitive contest.
This level ought to be more to his liking and he’s been eased 2lbs following that Cheltenham run, while softer ground will present no issues and a big run could be in the offing despite having to give away plenty of weight to his rivals.

About ITV Racing
ITV has a long history with horse racing, having first launched ITV Racing way back in 1969. However, following Channel 4 enjoying the rights for some time, it’s only recently been relaunched in the last few years, with former Sky Sports man Ed Chamberlain heading up the coverage.
With hundreds of meets across the year, horse racing on TV has never been better, with a wealth of great pundits analysing all the action and offering their thoughts on how each meet will go.
ITV Racing Pundits
- Kevin Blake
- Jason Weaver
- Luke Harvey
- AP McCoy
- Ruby Walsh
- Oli Bell
- Matt Chapman
- Alice Plunkett
- Brough Scott
- Ed Chamberlain
- Francesca Cumani
- Lucy Verasamy
Some of the ITV Racing pundits are better tipsters than others, and it is Jason Weaver and Kevin Blake who we’d recommend listening to for their tips.
Kevin Blake has a very strong knowledge of the Irish horses and works closely with trainer Joseph O’Brien in deciding which races his horses will run in. Jason Weaver is a former jockey and a student of the sport so his knowledge will often find winners during the live TV coverage.
Matt Chapman often posts winning selections on his Twitter account and Paddy Power blog, but the outspoken pundit also picks some bad tips.
The host of the show, Ed Chamberlain, is also very knowledgeable about the sport, and he does have a good record of picking the winners of some of the big races, including Tiger Roll in the Grand National and Anthony Van Dyck in the Epsom Derby.
What Channel is ITV Racing On?
The ITV coverage varies from ITV main channel, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4, so be sure to check your TV listings for all the ITV channels if you are looking for the ITV Racing schedule before reading our best bets.
