Steve Bruce will be expecting a positive response from his players after their 5-0 hammering at Leicester last week but he faces another difficult task when his old club Manchester United visit at St James’ Park. That clash features in this Sunday Accumulator alongside games from Ligue 1 and La Liga where decent home teams Lille and Real Sociedad hope to clinch another three points. Bundesliga action is also covered with Wolfsburg hosting lowly Union Berlin while AZ Alkmaar will aim to overcome Willem II in the Eredivisie.
A devastating 5-0 loss at Leicester last Sunday will have further dented confidence among the Newcastle players although they were reduced to ten players for the second period. A win at below-par Tottenham is the only victory registered by the Magpies this term and they have failed to beat both Watford and Brighton in their two latest Premier League games at St James’ Park. Visitors Manchester Utd last won the road when beating PSG back in early March and have drawn their last three competitive matches. Yet the Red Devils have registered three clean sheets in their last six fixtures and could claim a narrow low-scoring win at Newcastle.
Following their promotion from Bundesliga 2 last season, it has been a struggle for Union Berlin in the German top flight with just one victory earned and losing all three games during September. The Berliners have also failed to register a clean sheet in six league matches. A visit to Wolfsburg now awaits with the hosts unbeaten this term and netting in every competitive game. After drawing at St Etienne in midweek Europa League action, the Wolves could return to home soil and earn a fourth Bundesliga victory this season.
Just one goal scored in four Ligue 1 matches during September is not a good sign for Nimes although that strike contributed to a 1-0 home win against Toulouse. Yet the Southern French team have failed to find the net in three of four away games this term with no wins registered in any of those contests. Another game on the road beckons with a visit to Lille where the hosts have won all four domestic games this season. Although Les Dogues were beaten 2-1 on home soil by Chelsea in midweek Champions League action, Lille should return to winning ways at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Inconsistent is a suitable word to describe the form of Willem II this season with four wins and losses apiece from their first eight games in the Dutch Eredivisie season. Yet the Tilburg based team have lost all three fixtures when playing against clubs currently residing in the top six of the league table. Third-placed visitors AZ Alkmaar will provide another test for Willem especially after drawing with Manchester Utd in midweek cup action. AZ have won their last four league games with just one goal conceded and should seal another three points.
Home victories against Atletico Madrid and Alaves without conceding a goal will have boosted confidence at Real Sociedad although a 3-2 loss at Sevilla in their latest La Liga game prevented the San Sebastian based team from winning all four matches during September. Getafe now visit the Basque area of Spain having been beaten only by Atletico Madrid and Barcelona this season. The Madrid outfit have become La Liga draw specialists but despite winning 2-1 in Russia on Thursday evening, they may feel the effects of a tiring journey. A home win is tipped.
