The first round of fixtures for this month’s international break is over, and on Monday and Tuesday, we have the final round of fixtures. If the results last Thursday and Friday are something to go by, we are in for other exciting games.

Some games will decide whether certain nations are out of the race for a place in next year’s World Cup in Qatar, while others have the potential of securing a spot for some nations for the tournament next year. Let’s take a closer look at what awaits us in today’s World Cup qualifying fixtures as Qatar gets closer.

Estonia vs Wales

A game of the utmost importance to both nations, as it has the potential to determine the proceedings in group E. A win for Estonia on Monday would complicate things in the table, as they sit four points behind third-placed Wales, who sit level on points with the Czech Republic in second place.

Estonia head into this game having won against Belarus, whether Wales managed to get a draw away against the Czech Republic, so it’s all to play for in this group. The first match between these nations finished in a 0-0 stalemate, and we expect another cagey encounter, but Wales should have too much for the home side.

Croatia vs Slovakia

Slovakia suffered a defeat against Russia in their last qualifying match, and the result was a blow to their chances of qualifying for Qatar’s tournament. They started the campaign brightly, but they just seem not to be good enough to get a spot in the World Cup. We expect Croatia to win and all but seal their World Cup spot.

Iceland vs Lichtenstein

Both teams are out of the race for next year’s tournament, so this game is a good ground for them to lay out some new tactics, and give probably youngsters a chance to impress. Much more was expected of Iceland in these qualifiers, but they disappointed everyone with their lack of quality and desire.

Lichtenstein were the outsiders in this group, and they proved to be nowhere near good enough to race for the top two spots. Iceland will have too much for the visitors here, and we expect a comfortable home win on Monday.

Romania vs Armenia

Unlike Iceland and Lichtenstein, these two nations have all to play for in the next three fixtures, and every point will be very important to them. Romania impressed against Germany in their last game but came short at the end, and they walked away with nothing from Munich as they lost the game 2-1.

Armenia were favourites against Iceland, but they only managed to get a 1-1 draw, which only further complicated their situation in the group. There isn’t much to separate these two teams at the moment, but we’ll just go for the home side to edge this one.

North Macedonia vs Germany

North Macedonia are probably the surprise package in this group, as they currently sit second on goal difference, and they have qualification for next year’s tournament in their own hands. They head into this game on the back of a 4-0 win away at Lichtenstein, but Germany is opposition on a whole different level.

We all remember the shock 2-1 away win the Macedonians pulled back in March against Monday’s opponents, so never write them off. However, Germany will not make the same mistake twice, so they should get the job done in Skopje and secure their place in next year’s World Cup.
