Fulham vs Wigan Preview – 27/09/19: Championship

Scott Parker’s side won three of their first four Championship outings, however, it’s been slim pickings since for the Cottagers. Fulham’s struggles in front of goal have held them back, and they come off the back of three 1-1 draws. With no victory since August 21st, the West Londoners are losing ground on sides in the top half. They must get back to winning ways, and this seems like the ideal opportunity.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has been marked out of the game on a number of occasions, and he had a quiet game against Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend. If Wigan can keep tabs on the Serbian in this contest, they could get something from this tie.

The hosts almost held on for three points at Hillsborough, but couldn’t prevent Adthe Nuhiu from finding a way through. They have kept just two clean sheets all season, although both of those shutouts have come here at Craven Cottage.

Wigan’s survival hopes are likely to hinge on them picking up points at the DW, although Paul Cook’s side did manage to secure a point on their travels last time out. They are now unbeaten in three, and looked sharp against Charlton last weekend. David Marshall has been key to them picking up points in recent weeks with a string of smart saves, and he could be in for a busy evening once again.

They’ve been involved in some very entertaining games at this ground with the last two meetings between these two sides ending 2-2 and 3-2. They have managed to net in each of their last three visits to this West London ground.

Wigan’s set-piece joy

The majority of Wigans goals have come from set-pieces in recent weeks with Cheyenne Dunkley scored three goals inside seven days. Their second minute strike against QPR also came from defender Cedric Kipre. Corners and free-kicks have been very important to Wigan’s recent play, and they look to catch Fulham off-guard once again. The Cottagers defence has improved, although it is far from watertight, and they could take full advantage.

Dunkley is 12/1 to score anytime in this game (Bet365) whilst his likely central defensive partner Charlie Mulgrew is available is 15/2 (also Bet365). The latter scored a number of goals for Blackburn last season.

Fulham have the tools to exploit Wigan’s back-line

Wigan picked up an unexpected point at the Kcom two weeks ago, although the Latics still conceded twice in that game. They’ve conceded nine times this season away from the DW, and this could be the perfect opportunity for the likes of Anthony Knockaert, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ivan Cavaleiro to restore some confidence.

Last season, Wigan conceded 44 times on the road, and kept just a single clean sheet. Only relegated duo Rotherham and Ipswich shipped more on their travels. With an average of 1.91 goals conceded per game last year, they were breached all too easily. This season, that total stands at 2.25 goals per game – although it’s still early days.

Fulham could easily rack up a few goals if they can break through early in this tie. With Wigan’s obvious threat from deliveries and the Cottager’s incisive finishing, this could be an entertaining watch.
