Expert Tipster Prediction: Both sides have failed to meet their expectations so far this campaign with Villarreal languising at the bottom of La Liga. However, they do have a new manager who appears to have breathed some life into his underperforming squad. They managed to pick up a 2-2 draw at struggling Huesca last time out and they do have a good record against Los Merengues. The visitors are actually in good form and fresh from securing the FIFA Club World Cup but they are trailing Barcelona and they should be able to take advantage of this game in hand. It won’t be easy for them but I believe they’ll sneak through and win by a single goal.

Villarreal have improved and they must continue to make progress if they are to avoid slipping into the Segunda. A lack of goals has been the problem this season but this has improved under new coach Luis Garcia. However, the new man in charge hasn’t found a way to shore up the leaky defence and that could prove to be a huge issue against Real Madrid. The home side have only lost two of their last five home matches at Estadio de la Ceramica but Real Betis are the only side to have been defeated here. Since losing to Eibar, Real Madrid have kept three clean sheets in a row and they were rampant at the Club World Cup. They desperately need to win this tie and can’t afford to lose any more ground on Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. I think they will just edge this clash despite a number of absentees. The Yellow Submarine are still conceding too many goals and although they are improving, this game could come too soon for Garcia.
What are the best odds on Real Madrid Win? 5/6 with Ladbrokes
Real Madrid have kept three clean sheets in a row but they were against Huesca, Valencia and Vallecano and all three sides are low-scoring outfits. Villarreal also fit into that category but they have started to find their shooting boots. They have found the net in each of their last four home matches and scored nine in their last five games home and away. I think they will cause problems for Real Madrid and should be able to get one the scoresheet here. Real Madrid are missing Marcos Llorente and potentially Casemiro here so they will need to shuffle their pack. They will be dipping into the transfer market this January but for now, they must utilise their current squad. I think that Villarreal will find a way past Los Blancos and Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals is the second of our Villarreal vs Real Madrid predictions.
What is the best price on Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score? 3/4 with William Hill
There are a plethora of Real Madrid players who could get on the scoresheet here but I’m opting for in-form Carlos Bacca to find the net against the European champions. He has been in excellent form in recent weeks and netted in the cup win against Almeria and also has three goals in his last two La Liga games. He’s found his feet under the management and clearly had his issues with the old regime. He should offer plenty of energy and ensure that the Real Madrid defence don’t get a minutes peace. He is the third of our Villarreal vs Real Madrid predictions.
What are the best odds on Carlos Bacca to score anytime? 47/20 with 888Sport
The statistics display that there is a marginal chance of this game featuring three or more goals. That will be based on Real Madrid’s recent defensive displays but they remain vulnerable and Over 2.5 Goals could be an option here 8/15 whilst the 1/2 available for Both Teams to Score suggests that the bookies still don’t trust Los Merengues at the back.
One of my favourite markets is ‘Exact Goals’ and 2 or 3 Goals is available at 11/10 and would have landed in five of the last eight for Villarreal. It would also have cashed in during three of Real Madrid’s last five.
Corners could also be plentiful and the average suggests that we could be seeing double figures here.
Carlos Bacca is our anytime goalscorer tip but Gareth Bale will be popular following his hat-trick against the Kashima Antlers. He is 4/1 to net the opener in this tie, the same price as team-mate Karim Benzema.
