Extra Place Races Today from Every Bookies

Extra place races give you more chances to land an each-way bet, and the list below updates every morning with the day’s enhanced places from the top UK bookmakers.

When a bookmaker runs an extra place offer, the place part of your each-way bet pays out on more positions than the industry standard – a fourth place instead of three, say – so a horse that just misses the frame can still return your money. Here are today’s extra place races, which bookies run them most often, and how to make them work for you.

Our list of extra place races updates automatically each morning once the bookmakers confirm the day’s offers, usually from around 8am. Each race shows the places paid and the each-way terms. For our selections, see our each-way tips today.

Extra Place Bookmakers

These are the bookmakers we partner with that run extra place races, and the accounts worth having open for your each-way racing bets. Having more than one lets you take the best terms on the day, as the number of places paid can differ from book to book on the same race.

What Are Extra Place Races?

Extra places apply to each-way bets on horse racing. An each-way bet is really two bets in one: half your stake goes on the horse to win, and half on it to finish in a place. A standard each-way bet pays the place part on a set number of positions depending on the field size. When a bookmaker offers an extra place, they pay out on one or more additional positions beyond that standard – so your place bet still wins if your horse finishes a spot or two further back than it normally would need to.

For example, in a 12-runner handicap the standard each-way bet pays places 1 to 3. If a bookmaker is offering an extra place on that race, they also pay out if your horse finishes 4th. It is a simple edge: more places means more chances of a return from the same bet.

Standard Each-Way Place Terms

Extra places are measured against these industry-standard place terms. Anything a bookmaker pays beyond them is an extra place.

RunnersStandard Place Terms
1 to 4 runnersWin only
5 to 7 runners1/4 odds, places 1 and 2
8+ runners (non-handicap)1/5 odds, places 1, 2 and 3
12 to 15 runners (handicaps)1/4 odds, places 1, 2 and 3
16+ runners (handicaps)1/4 odds, places 1, 2, 3 and 4

Which Bookies Pay Extra Places Most Often?

Not every bookmaker that takes racing bets offers extra places, and those that do vary in how often they run them and how many extra places they pay. On a big race the difference can be significant – one bookmaker might pay six places instead of four on the Grand National while another pays eight. It pays to have more than one account open so you can take the best terms on the day.

From our own account testing, Betfred, bet365, William Hill, Coral, Ladbrokes and BoyleSports are the most reliable for daily extra places, and they tend to go biggest on the showpiece handicaps at the major festivals.

How to Make the Most of Extra Places

Extra places are at their most valuable in big-field handicaps, where the extra position is most likely to come into play. A few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Target large handicaps – the more runners, the more an extra place is worth, and the bigger the field the more likely a well-fancied horse is to place rather than win.
  • Compare terms across bookmakers before you bet – on the biggest races the number of places paid can differ from one book to the next.
  • Each-way value sits in horses at bigger prices – a short favourite rarely makes an each-way bet pay, while a 12/1 shot placing can return a profit on the place part alone.
  • Check whether the race qualifies – extra places usually apply to selected handicaps, not every race on the card.

Extra Places at the Big Festivals

The festivals are when extra places matter most, because the big-field handicaps are exactly the races bookmakers enhance. We update our festival guides with the confirmed extra place offers in the days leading up to each meeting:

  • Cheltenham Festival – huge competitive handicaps and widespread extra place offers across the four days.
  • Royal Ascot – extra places on several races each day, available from 8am.
  • The Grand National – the biggest extra place race of the year, with bookmakers paying well beyond the standard terms.
  • Glorious Goodwood – the Stewards’ Cup and the week’s handicaps regularly attract enhanced places.

Extra Place Races FAQs

What are extra place races?
Races where a bookmaker pays the place part of an each-way bet on more positions than the industry standard – for example four places instead of three in a handicap. They increase your chance of a return on an each-way bet.

Which bookmakers offer extra places?
Betfred, bet365, William Hill, Coral, Ladbrokes, BoyleSports, BetMGM, SpreadEx, 10Bet, QuinnBet and BetTOM run them most frequently. The races that qualify are confirmed each morning and listed at the top of this page.

How do extra places work on an each-way bet?
Your each-way bet is two bets: one on the horse to win and one on it to place. The extra place applies to the place part, so if a bookmaker pays four places instead of three, your place bet wins when the horse finishes anywhere in the first four.

When are the day’s extra place races confirmed?
Most bookmakers confirm their extra place races from around 8am. Our list updates every morning once they are live, so check back from 8am for the day’s races.

Are extra places worth it?
Yes, particularly in big-field handicaps and on horses at bigger prices, where the additional place is most likely to pay. On the showpiece races the extra places can be the difference between a losing and a winning bet.

Extra place offers and places paid are set by the bookmakers and are subject to change – always confirm the terms at the bookmaker before betting. 18+. Please gamble responsibly. GambleAware.org · GamCare.org.uk.
