Mohamed Salah: Liverpool’s emerging golden boy
Few could ever seek to discredit Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool after watching the Reds triumph over Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final. It was a match that could potentially live on in infamy, providing that Liverpool maintain their strong form against Pep Guardiola’s star-studded outfit within the reverse fixture.
Reds fans have much to shout about in the wake of their celebratory 3-0 victory, with a number of Klopp’s most recognised stars stepping up to the plate. Roberto Firmino was excellent as usual, whilst Sadio Mane continues to impress with his keen eye for goal inside the final third. Yet of course, the name on everybody’s lips at the moment quite rightly arrives in the form of 25-year-old Mohamed Salah.
Premier League onlookers were getting far more than they bargained for upon the completion of Salah’s £37 million summer move. Although fans of the English game had previously watched him in action whilst wearing Chelsea colours, the widely admired Egyptian international was never offered quite enough time to impress down at Stamford Bridge it seems.
Had Chelsea shown a little more faith in the current Liverpool favourite way back when, perhaps the Blues would still be trying their hand among the upper echelons of the English top-flight with one eye on a prestigious Champions League semi-final, as opposed to their Merseyside rivals. Despite Chelsea’s apparent motives back in 2014, the decision to part ways with the Mohamed Salah seems to be one steeped in gross misjudgement.
The rapidly emerging Egyptian international is set to play out an exciting conclusion to the domestic season alongside the rest of his jubilant Liverpool teammates, whilst also considering his nation’s upcoming World Cup ambitions throughout the summer. With many continuing to draw comparisons between himself and Barcelona’s idolised Argentine talisman, Lionel Messi, the future looks a rather bright place for the in-form Anfield star.
Although Salah lacks both the precision and otherworldliness of his left-footed South American counterpart, his ability to find the back of the net on both a consistent and creative basis remains truly astounding. Salah is in red hot form at the moment thanks to the current set-up at Anfield, something Manchester City clearly failed to deal with in the run up to their midweek Champions League embarrassment at the hands of Liverpool.
Can Salah continue his strong form down on Merseyside, and possibly lead Liverpool all the way to the Champions League final? Perhaps. He possesses the skill, work-rate and all-round likability to seemingly get the job done, despite the multitude of equally talented stars still plying their trade among the latter stages of the competition.
Liverpool fans were united in their sorrow with the loss of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona not so long ago, yet now, with Jurgen Klopp’s quick-footed Egyptian claiming all the headlines in front of the Anfield faithful, memories of the talented Brazilian seem few and far between.
Regardless of what eventually transpires between now and the end of the season, Mohamed Salah remains the undisputed golden boy on Merseyside.
