The Most Memorable Champions League Goals Of All-Time

The Champions League produces moments to remember each and every season. This year has been the season of remarkable comebacks. Both Liverpool and Tottenham go into the final following unforgettable turnarounds, but in previous years it’s all about the goals. And boy, we’ve seen some memorable ones.

Some of the greatest goals in history have been scored following that Champions League Anthem, forever added to montages, reviews and compared to the goals of today.

But what are the most memorable strikes in Champions League history? Our team at thatsagoal.com whittled it down to five we really will never forget…

CRISTIANO RONALDO vs Juventus

If Cristiano Ronaldo hadn’t taken that leap and produced one of the most phenomenal examples of athleticism, quality and down-right genius we would have had a whole host of goals to sieve through that could have been contenders for most memorable Champions League goals.

The fact is though he did, perhaps bettering any other overhead kick that has been scored before it. Juventus fans stood and applauded. The greatest gift any opposition fan can give. Word’s can’t describe this one. Sit back and enjoy. That’s what it’s there for.

RONALDO vs Manchester United

In the 2002/03 season Brazil’s El Fenomeno produced one of the most devastating displays the Champions League has seen, and while his hat-trick at Old Trafford doesn’t necessarily contain any goals that as standalone would be overly memorable (although two of the three are pretty special), it’s as a collective which makes them truly memorable.

It was the Quarter Final of the Champions League. Manchester United were 3-1 down going into the Second Leg, and it was put to bed thanks to an unstoppable performance from Ronaldo.

Such was the quality he displayed, he received a standing ovation from the United faithful, despite their side going out 6-5 on aggregate. It’ll forever be remembered as one of Ronaldo’s great performances and one of the most memorable moments in Champions League history.

JUNINHO vs Bayern Munich

Juninho Pernambucano really did make his name in the Champions League. The Lyon midfielder was instrumental in his side’s dominance in Ligue 1 and for a period helped them become one of Europe’s top teams, regularly reaching the knockout stages.

It was his free-kicks that elevated him to cult hero status and perhaps his finest came in the 2003/04 season against Bayern Munich in the Group Stage.

Around 30-yards from goal, Juninho bent the ball into the far top right hand corner, sending Oliver Kahn smashing into the post and the ball glancing it on its way into the goal.

ZIDANE vs Bayer Leverkusen

Zinedine Zidane’s Champions League Final strike is often regarded as the most iconic goal in history, and quite rightly so.

Everything around it was simply magnificent.

The scores were level approaching half-time, yet there Zizou was, within moments of the break. Alone, unmarked on the edge of the box. Roberto Carlos directed a cross towards him, out of hope more than anything. It looped, high in the air.

To Zidane, no bother. His eyes never leaving the ball, he steadied, and then struck one of the most beautiful volleys you’ll ever see.

The goal put the Galacticos in the lead 2-1, a scoreline which remained, making that strike the winner. And a truly deserved one.

MESSI vs Real Madrid

Of course, we couldn’t leave the little magician out. His moments of genius are the highlight of any Champions League season.

It was against Real Madrid where his biggest moment came. An El Clasico Champions League Semi-Final. It was the first leg at the Bernabeu where Messi took the game by the scruff of the neck and produced a stunning solo run, beating five players before slotting the ball past Iker Casillias.

That was his second and ultimately the goal that put the tie to bed, as Real Madrid could never recover. Barcelona went on to win the Final 3-1 against Manchester United at Wembley, where Messi was once again unplayable.
