Southend vs Blackpool Preview

The Shrimpers only just preserved their League One status last season, and they got off to a poor start this time around with a tame 1-0 defeat to Coventry. Despite the Sky Blues playing in an unfamiliar ground, Southend were unable to create much and rarely threatened their opponents. Kevin Bond’s men tend to be stronger at home, although they did lose 13 of their 23 matches here last year. They’ve added plenty of new names this summer including signing a whole new defence, and Leicester’s Layton Ndukwu joins to add some much needed firepower. They appear to lack a bit of creativity, and they barely registered on the XG scale until late in the game. They need to be better in this tie. They don’t have a great record against Blackpool with just one win in their last five, and they’ll have to be at their best to halt the Seasiders bandwagon on Saturday. They do have the excellent Stephen Humphrys, who is always a threat, and they did spoil Blackpool’s homecoming last season by picking up a 2-2 draw at Bloomfield Road.

There was a carnival atmosphere around Bloomfield Road last weekend as 11,000 fans watched the Tangerines record a 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers. It was a very controlled performance from Simon Grayson’s side, who opened the scoring from the penalty spot, and added a second just after the break. Under Terry McPhillips, Blackpool were hard to beat last season, and much the same is expected under the returning Grayson. However, the Gas did hit the woodwork on two occasions, and Blackpool were probably lucky to come away with a clean sheet. New signing Jamie Devitt wasn’t involved last weekend, and he will be hoping to feature in the squad whilst the excellent Sully KaiKai could be the difference maker once again. Blackpool are hoping to win back-to-back opening games for the first time since 2013-14, and they certainly have a big enough squad to challenge at the right end of the table.

Southend vs Blackpool Betting Tips

The Shrimpers were very poor last weekend, and although you shouldn’t put too much emphasis on the data from an opening contest, they did have one of the lowest XG ratings in the division. They need to find a way of creating better chances, and could be up against it here. Blackpool could struggle to control games against better sides in League One this year, but Southend do not fall into that category, and they are well worth backing on the DNB here.

Apart from last season’s 2-2 draw, very few contests between these two tend to end all-square, but we’ll get our money back if the two teams cannot be separated. Blackpool Draw No Bet is 31/40 with Bet Victor and is our first pick.

Armand Gnandouillet is a hugely frustrating player to watch. His first touch is poor, and he often look languid throughout the 90 minutes. However, he does seem to have a knack of finding the back of the net, and he’s a real nuisance in the air. The Frenchman could make the difference, and double his tally for the campaign here. He’s 12/5 favourite to find the net.
