Sunderland vs Portsmouth Betting Tips
Sunderland’s recent record does make it easy to point to the draw in this one, but there genuinely isn’t much between the pair. Both sides are expected to be in the top six, and just one goal separated them when they met in the aforementioned play-offs. Not many sides will leave the North East with all three points, and Pompey may have to settle for the draw. It’s available at 21/10, and considering it would have landed in five of the last eight meetings between the pair, it looks a value pick.
Sunderland only failed to find the net once last season with Barnsley proving the only side able to keep them off the score-sheet. They don’t keep many clean sheets though, and Pompey have enough firepower in their squad to find a way through. Both Teams to Score? Yes is a very tempting for our betting tips at Evens with Betfred.
Sunderland vs Portsmouth Match Preview
Sunderland’s fans frustrations with Jack Ross are beginning to grow again. The Black Cats have drawn their opening two games 1-1, and their penchant for that particular scoreline continues. They were pretty impressive in their opener against Oxford, although they needed a penalty to draw level. They were off the pace seven days ago against Ipswich, and their energy levels will need to be much higher today. They did pick up a big EFL Cup win against Accrington in midweek with both Marc McNulty and Charlie Wyke getting off the mark for the campaign. That victory could potentially be the catalyst for better things, although they face a tricky tie against Pompey this weekend. These two sides are familiar foes, and Jack Ross did win the psychological battle when they met in the play-offs. Sunderland kept two clean sheets against Portsmouth, in a rare display of defensive discipline, and they will be looking for a repeat performance here.

Pompey made an underwhelming start to the season, slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Shrewsbury. Kenny Jackett’s side were the better side in that came and fell victim to a wondergoal, but they couldn’t find a way past a resolute Salop back-line. They bounced back in ideal fashion with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Birmingham’s second string side in the EFL Cup, and that was followed by a comfortable victory over Tranmere. The XG numbers that Pompey have produced are very impressive, and they are creating chances. Ben Close has been the star of the show so far with two stunning strikes, and they have numerous options from the bench. Portsmouth can occasionally struggle to break down compact sides, but that shouldn’t be a problem here, as Sunderland have looked fairly open so far. Jackett must decide whether to persist with Ellis Harrison or replace the lively frontman with John Marquis.
