Sky Bet Championship predictions

Championship top goalscorer betting tips for the new season – which players should you bet on to top the goalscoring charts and what is the best each-way bet for a Championship top scorer in the 2018/19 season?

On the eve of the 2018-19 Championship campaign, anybody seeking a bet on the leading goalscoring should glance at the charts for last season with none of the four top strikers belonging to any of the promoted teams. Matej Vydra scored 21 goals as Derby finished in sixth position while Lewis Grabban netted the majority of his 20 goals for Sunderland before moving to playoff finalists Aston Villa. This article focuses on those players who could be leading marksman this term and may not necessarily feature for one of the more high-profile teams.

Championship Top Goalscorer Candidates

As for Vydra, he has been the subject of much transfer speculation throughout the summer and repeating his goalscoring exploits of the 2017-18 campaign may be difficult. The Czech international is offered at 14/1 with Coral to be leading striker whereas Lewis Grabban could be a decent bet to improve upon his second position last term.

However, the ex-Sunderland striker has now moved to Nottingham Forest where he may face opposition from another new signing Hillal Soudani. The Algerian international has been a fairly prolific scorer in Croatian football over the past two seasons but is untested in the Championship. Should he adapt to this level, he could share the goals with Grabban in a promising Forest team.

Benik Afobe – 9/1 with Ladbrokes.

Leading the current market for top Championship goalscorer with most bookmakers is Benik Afobe at a general price of 7/1. Afobe has been signed by Wolves but was almost immediately loaned to Stoke, potentially for the rest of the season. The London-born striker has not been so prolific in the Premier League since netting 13 Championship goals for Wolves during the 2014-15 campaign, and he may benefit from a return to the second tier.

Mohamed Eisa – 100/1 with William Hill.

Among the other contenders, there are several new arrivals from the lower leagues eager to prove themselves in the Championship. One such player is 23-year-old Mohamed Eisa who netted 23 League Two goals in his first season at Cheltenham last term. The Sudanese forward had been prolific in southern non-league football prior to moving to Gloucestershire and he will now focus on scoring goals for Bristol City where last season’s leading striker Bobby Reid has departed for Cardiff City. Eisa is available at 100/1 with William Hill to be leading Championship striker but could also be good each-way value.

Marc McNulty – 100/1 with Ladbrokes.

Marc McNulty also netted the same number of goals as Eisa last season when playing for Coventry last season but he had not produced the same level of form in previous League One campaigns. It is debatable whether he can be as effective for Reading at Championship level in the coming months, and the same could be said of Jack Marriott who could not stop scoring goals for Peterborough last term but has much to prove at Derby.

Will Grigg – 66/1 with Ladbrokes.

Will Grigg will be another player determined to prove himself in Championship football after scoring 19 League One goals for Wigan last season. The Northern Ireland international is very productive in third tier football but could only score five league goals during Wigan’s 2016-17 relegation season from the Championship. Wigan boss Paul Cook has been busy in the transfer market this summer and that could benefit Grigg who is priced at 66/1  to be the Championship top goalscorer this season.

As for players who competed in the Championship last season, Leon Clarke and Bill Sharp are both expected to contribute their fair share of strikes for Sheffield United and likewise Britt Assombalonga at Middlesbrough, but can they net sufficient goals to emerge as leading marksman.

Championship Top Goalscorer Predictions (each-way)

However, two players to note from last season is the improving Jarrod Bowen at Hull City and Brentford’s Neal Maupay. 21-year-old Bowen was leading striker at the KCOM Stadium last season with 14 league goals and it is quite possible that he could improve upon that scoring rate this term with the Tigers aiming to challenge in the top half of the table during the 2017-18 campaign. Bowen represents good each way value priced at 100/1 with Ladbrokes.

Maupay is of a similar age to Bowen and netted 12 league goals last season during his first campaign in English football after moving from France. He adapted well to the rigours of the Championship as a regular first-team player and he may now be better equipped to build upon last season’s performance. The Frenchman could be a worthwhile each-way bet Championship top goalscorer betting tips and he can benefit from playing in a Brentford team which continues to favour attacking football.
