Ajax vs PSV Preview

The Eredivisie season is just seven days away, and another fascinating battle at the top awaits. Last seasons top two meet for this curtain-raiser, with both sides hoping to add some more silverware to their cabinet. Feyenoord have won the last two stagings of the Johann Cruyff Shield, but they underperformed last season. PSV won this match in 2015 and 2016 whilst Ajax have not been successful in this match since 2013.

Both sides have made changes over the summer with new recruit Bruma arriving in Eindhoven, and making an instant impact on Tuesday night. He is joined by Oscar Boscagli and Ibrahim Allefay. Despite losing Matthias de Ligt, Ajax still look strong with Edson Alvarez an interesting recruit, whilst Kik Pierie joins from Heerenveen. Quincy Promes is a lively player who should be able to give the Amsterdam side plenty of energy up top.

PSV have already been in competitive action, beating Basel 3-2 with a last gasp effort on Tuesday night. The in-form Donyell Malen netted an injury-time winner to give the men from Eindhoven a precious lead travelling to Switzerland next week. Ajax have played a number of club friendlies, and it’ll be interesting to see how they line-up for this fixture.

This is essentially a glorified friendly, and that has to be taken into consideration. It won’t be played at full-pelt, and there may be a few experimental line-ups from both managers.

Ajax vs PSV Betting Tips

Ajax had a tremendous season last year, and they should be able to build upon that. Erik ten Hag’s men were magnificent in the Champions League, and they also ended the campaign with seven consecutive victories. The club have a suitably strong squad once again, and they should be able to pick up their first victory in this match for six years.

PSV have plenty of attacking talent, and they are always a danger going forward. However, their defence is still concerning. They conceded twice against Basel, and needed that last-minute goal to rescue them at the Phillips Stadion. Although we haven’t seen Ajax in competitive action yet, they should be strong enough to win this contest. They have enjoyed success at the Amsterdam Arena in recent years against PSV, and should be able to maintain that good record.

There should be goals in this tie. It isn’t always the highest scoring of games, but it did end 4-2 when the pair last met in this competition. PSV have proved that they cannot defend, and Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score looks like a decent combination at 7/10.
