Saturday 9 May

Liverpool vs Chelsea — Anfield, 12:30

Sutton’s prediction: 2-1

Liverpool still look likely to finish in the Champions League places despite their defeat by Manchester United last time out, but Sutton points to that result as another disappointment in what’s been a poor season by their standards. Chelsea have bigger problems — six straight league defeats have dropped them to ninth and they’re absolutely desperate for a result. Sutton doesn’t see them getting anything at Anfield, with Cole Palmer “looking a shadow of the player we know he is” and the Blues struggling defensively. The home win is the natural bet builder anchor here.

Brighton vs Wolves — Amex Stadium, 15:00

Sutton’s prediction: 2-0

Sutton thought Brighton would beat Newcastle last week and they had their chances despite losing — there’s no way they won’t win this time according to him. Wolves had an upturn in form under Rob Edwards but it doesn’t feel sustained: yes they got a point at Sunderland, but the Black Cats played for more than an hour with 10 men. The Seagulls are at home, chasing sixth place, and Sutton doesn’t see them slipping up. A two-goal home win is the angle for BTTS-No accumulator builders or correct score tipsters.

Fulham vs Bournemouth — Craven Cottage, 15:00

Sutton’s prediction: 1-2

Sutton concedes it’s probably good news for Marco Silva that he’s backing Bournemouth — he’s struggled with Fulham predictions all season. But he can’t see past the Cherries’ run of 15 league games unbeaten and the fact they won the reverse fixture in October thanks to a late comeback. Fulham have a decent home record but Sutton’s expecting another late Bournemouth winner. The away win at Bournemouth’s current form-driven prices is the obvious bet of the day angle, with Bournemouth value players on the shots-on-target market also worth checking.

Sunderland vs Manchester United — Stadium of Light, 15:00

Sutton’s prediction: 1-1

Sutton credits Manchester United boss Michael Carrick with bringing calmness to the club after taking over a “rabble” in January, with last week’s win at Liverpool sealing Champions League qualification. He raises the question of whether United will give Carrick the job long-term — and admits given their recent decisions, he wouldn’t be sure. On the game itself, going to Sunderland remains tough despite their 5-0 home defeat to Forest last time out. Sutton has kept backing Sunderland and kept getting them wrong — but expects a point this time, even with their minds drifting toward the beach.

Manchester City vs Brentford — Etihad Stadium, 17:30

Sutton’s prediction: 3-1

The title is out of Manchester City’s hands after their 3-3 draw at Everton, but Sutton notes their late equaliser on Monday could still prove huge — it means Arsenal must win their final three games to be sure of the title. City definitely have to win this and need to be more ruthless in front of goal. Brentford are in the mix for the top six and only lost narrowly at the Etihad earlier in the season. Sutton admits to being selfish: he needs Erling Haaland to score for his Fantasy team, so he’s going City and the anytime goalscorer angle.

Sunday 10 May

Burnley vs Aston Villa — Turf Moor, 14:00

Sutton’s prediction: 0-2

Fifth-placed Aston Villa were booed off last weekend after losing at home to struggling Tottenham. Unai Emery had made a lot of changes with his side’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest in mind, and they were pretty awful against Spurs. Even if they’re poor again here, Sutton thinks they’ll get the better of managerless Burnley. The Villa win is the safer accumulator angle, though Sutton hints Emery might rest players again — worth factoring into BTTS bets where Villa rotation could affect goals at both ends.

Crystal Palace vs Everton — Selhurst Park, 14:00

Sutton’s prediction: 0-1

Crystal Palace have had Europe on their minds and it might be difficult for them to shake off that mindset, according to Sutton. Everton have developed a frustrating habit of conceding costly late goals — it’s happened in their last three games against Liverpool, West Ham and City — and they’ve lost ground in the race for sixth place. Sutton’s expecting a different ending for David Moyes and his side on Sunday: this time they hold on for a win. The away result at Selhurst Park makes the Everton win plus Under 2.5 goals a sharp value combination for bet builders.

Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle — City Ground, 14:00

Sutton’s prediction: 1-1

Forest aren’t mathematically safe yet on 42 points and play before West Ham and Tottenham this weekend, so they’ll go into this game still needing something. Sutton credits Vitor Pereira’s rebuild and notes Forest are scoring goals but worries Morgan Gibbs-White’s fitness is critical after his head injury. The other concern is how much Thursday’s Europa League semi-final with Villa will take out of them. Sutton isn’t sure Newcastle can take advantage even if Forest are tired — Eddie Howe’s win over Brighton was needed but unconvincing. All considered, the draw is the call. The 1-1 is value for correct score tippers.

West Ham vs Arsenal — London Stadium, 16:30

Sutton’s prediction: 1-3

Arsenal look a totally different proposition on the attacking front with Bukayo Saka back in the team, and Sutton expects it to be hard for West Ham to keep them out. The Hammers desperately need a result after losing last weekend while their relegation rivals all won — even a point could see them further adrift depending on what Spurs do against Leeds on Monday. Sutton notes Arsenal have had big wins at London Stadium in each of the past two seasons. He doesn’t see five or six again, but he doesn’t see Arsenal slipping up either. A 3-1 Arsenal win plus Saka anytime goalscorer is the natural bet builder construction.

Monday 11 May

Tottenham vs Leeds — Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, 20:00

Sutton’s prediction: 2-1

Leeds are all but safe now and could be absolutely certain of staying up by the time they play this game — a scenario that would suit Spurs, but Sutton’s backing Roberto de Zerbi’s side regardless. The 3-1 win at Villa Park last weekend was an enormous result and Spurs have momentum, having won two league games in a row for the first time since August. Sutton expects more of the same and is calling three straight wins with the same scoreline that won them the reverse fixture at Elland Road in October. Worth pairing with Spurs’ Premier League survival picture where the relegation odds context matters.

Who gives the BBC Premier League Predictions?

Chris Sutton has taken over from Lawro as the main BBC pundit predicting the Premier League matches each weekend. He gives his correct score guesses for each game and on the BBC Sport website, you will usually see him challenging a guest to see who can get the most predictions correct. They give points for a correct score and points for a correct match result. If you still want them, you can see Lawro’s predictions at Paddy Power for the Premier League games.

Who is Chris Sutton?

Chris Sutton is a former Premier League striker who played for a number of clubs as a professional, including Norwich, Blackburn, Chelsea, Celtic, Aston Villa and England. He scored over 150 career goals and formed a formidable partnership up front with Alan Shearer at Blackburn Rovers in the mid-1990s.

Sutton is now a football pundit for the BBC after previously working as a BT Sport pundit.

Which League does Chris Sutton do Predictions on?

Each week, you will see Premier League predictions from Chris Sutton, and when there is FA Cup action, he will also offer his thoughts on those matches. However, the Premier League is where you will find most of Sutton’s predictions for the BBC Sport website and this includes the midweek matches, Boxing Day and the last day of the season where there is usually a lot still to play for.

What bets does Chris Sutton predict?

Chris Sutton makes correct score predictions for each round of Premier League matches but you are not restricted to just betting on the score if you wish. You could also use his scores to bet on both teams to score, win-draw-win or over/under 2.5 goals bets.

For example, if the Sutton prediction is a 2-2 draw between Arsenal and Liverpool, you could bet on 2-2, both teams to score, the match to be a draw or over 2.5 goals. All of these bets would still be winners if the prediction is correct.
