Everton v Chelsea (Saturday, 12:30)
Chris Sutton is sticking with unbeaten Everton to make life awkward for an unpredictable Chelsea. He has been impressed by Everton’s football as much as their results — always well organised, and good enough to have beaten Hull last time out given the chances Thierno Barry had. Chelsea, by contrast, he finds impossible to call: Bournemouth out-performed them on expected goals last weekend yet lost 5-1, which sums up how watchable but erratic Xabi Alonso’s side are. You at least know what you get from Everton, and Sutton backs them to frustrate Chelsea and extend their unbeaten run.
Sutton’s prediction: 1-1
Brentford v Liverpool (Saturday, 15:00)
Sutton makes this a tricky afternoon for Liverpool and does not fancy them to win it. Brentford are unbeaten too and full of momentum, even if he thought them a little fortunate to draw at Aston Villa. Liverpool won at LASK in midweek — Bradley Barcola helping himself to a hat-trick — but conceded three and still look vulnerable at the back. If they empty the midfield again, Brentford’s direct running in behind will punish them, and Sutton has his doubts about Florian Wirtz’s end product. He is certain Liverpool won’t keep a clean sheet, and calls it a 2-2 draw.

Fulham v Hull (Saturday, 15:00)
Sutton goes against the form and sides with Fulham, for whom this is a massive game. Alvaro Arbeloa is still chasing his first league win, and losing so late to Ipswich having had it in the bag was desperate, with a trip to Coventry to come if the pressure builds. Yet Sutton has watched Fulham play well against Liverpool and Manchester United without getting over the line, and thinks their results haven’t reflected their performances. Hull, bull-in-a-china-shop and relishing their start, will have a go, but he backs Fulham to finally click, 3-1.

Manchester City v Ipswich (Saturday, 15:00)
Sutton expects Manchester City to pick up where their PSG response left off. He was at the Etihad for their Champions League defeat and thought City’s second-half display a magnificent reaction, the kind that could do them the world of good psychologically if the sides meet again. Amid all the noise around the club, he has seen real unity and intensity in that game and against Liverpool. He wonders how much the PSG effort took out of them, but expects them to keep their foot down. Ipswich will have a go, as they do, but City have far too much quality. He says 4-0.

Newcastle v Aston Villa (Saturday, 17:30)
Sutton can only be certain of one thing here — there will be goals. Newcastle’s 4-1 defeat at Coventry on Monday was a wild game in which the scoreline could have been anything given the chances they created, such is their all-out approach. Aston Villa have started slowly on results, but he thinks they have done all right given the players Unai Emery lost, with Johan Manzambi getting fitter and Nicolas Jackson in form. They were good against Brentford without being ruthless, a problem they fixed against Fenerbahce. A really hard one to call, and he leans to a 2-3 away win.

Bournemouth v Sunderland (Sunday, 14:00)
Sutton cannot split two out-of-sorts sides who both badly need a positive result. Both play in Europe on Thursday and neither is in form: Sunderland have lost three in a row, and Bournemouth are still without a league win. He points to the Cherries’ habit of letting leads slip — against Chelsea they went 2-0 down from kick-off and then shipped a third seconds into the second half, which must have left Marco Rose livid after his half-time warning. With both sides desperate, he expects a close, tight game and can’t pick a winner, calling it 1-1.

Brighton v Crystal Palace (Sunday, 14:00)
Sutton does not see Crystal Palace getting anything against a flying Brighton. He is still not quite sure how Palace beat Nottingham Forest last week given the chances Forest spurned. Brighton, meanwhile, are in excellent form, showing great resilience to hold on at 1-0 with 10 men against Sunderland and then grabbing a second at the death. Both sides are in European action on Thursday and will have to balance their selections, but he doesn’t see that affecting Brighton any more than Palace. He backs the Seagulls to continue their run, 2-1.

Leeds v Manchester United (Sunday, 14:00)
Sutton has finally given up on Manchester United, and expects Leeds to beat them convincingly. He found Lisandro Martinez’s outburst about United’s recruitment very strange, especially coming after the error that cost victory over Tottenham, and thinks it shows the state the club is in — Spurs having played them off the park early in that game. United are getting desperate and might raise their game, but he doesn’t buy it. Having backed United most weeks this season, he says he has had enough of losing his head over them. Leeds, 5-0.

Nottingham Forest v Arsenal (Sunday, 16:30)
Sutton doesn’t think Nottingham Forest have a clean sheet in them this time, and expects a comfortable Arsenal win. Forest held the Gunners 0-0 at the City Ground last season, and he thought them pretty good in defeat at Crystal Palace, but they simply didn’t take their chances. He can’t see them causing Arsenal too many problems now. The Gunners warmed up with a good Champions League win over Lille on Tuesday, and he expects this to be just as straightforward. Sutton goes 0-3 to Arsenal.

Tottenham v Coventry (Monday, 20:00)
Sutton makes it Tottenham’s night as they chase a first win of the season. Fresh from a training camp in Marbella, Spurs are about to find out if it worked — fail to beat Coventry and they might be straight back out there. Joking aside, he thinks they are already improving and played well against Manchester United last week. Coventry are a dangerous counter-attacking side whose pace in forward areas will cause problems, but he expects Tottenham to have just enough, 2-1.
