Romania vs Norway Preview – 15/10/2019 Euro Qualifier

Norway left it late to level in Oslo on Saturday evening as a Josh King penalty kept their hopes of qualification alive and halted Spain’s progression. The hosts sat very deep throughout the contest and made themselves tough to break down. The Norwegians managed to stem the tide until the second half with Saul’s 57th minute strike breaking the deadlock.

Norway sit in fourth spot and are unbeaten in each of their last six Euro Qualifiers. Three points from this tie would see them go level with Romania in joint-third place. With November games against the Faroe Islands and Malta, Lars Lagerback’s side can put themselves in a very favourable position with a win on Tuesday night.

Romania were not in action over the weekend and they will be hoping that can give them the fitness edge in this fixture. They have collected 13 points so far although with games against Spain and Sweden to come, they desperately need to collect the maximum in this one.

These two sides drew 2-2 in Oslo earlier in the year and there is very little between them once again. If Norway secure a point in this game, they are still able to qualify although they may need a favour from neighbours Sweden along the way.

Romania’s Record in Bucharest isn’t Perfect

The hosts do not give much away in front of their own fans. Spain edged them out 2-1 in Bucharest despite going down to ten men whilst Sweden, Finland and Chile have all lost here. However, they could only pick up a single point against both Serbia and Montenegro in the UEFA Nations League whilst George Puscas’ goal gave them a narrow win against Malta.

On first glance, their home form looks very strong although the quality of opponent (Sweden excepted) is questionable. Poland, Netherlands, Spain and even Albania have all won here over the last three years and only Lithuania, Kazakhstan and Faroe Islands have been comprehensively beaten here.

Low Scoring Norway On the Road

Although Norway have a talented squad, Lagerback tends to favour a conservative approach on the road. Their recent games on their travels have offered very few goals and this must-not-lose contest could go the same way. They dispatched of Malta and the Faroe Islands (both 2-0) and were narrowly edged out by Spain. In their last six competitive games on the road, they’ve conceded just five times and kept two clean sheets.

Although they may not opt for a safety-first approach, they are likely to be cautious – especially with so much at stake.
