Fulham vs Charlton Preview – 05/10/2019: Championship

Fulham’s quest for promotion appears to be back on track after Scott Parker’s men secured back-to-back wins in the space of five days. The Cottagers were at their destructive best against Reading on Tuesday night with Tom Cairney and Aleksandar Mitrovic both getting onto the scoresheet. After drawing three consecutive matches, the former midfielder will be delighted to see his side get back on track, and clamber up to fourth in the table.

One of Fulham’s big problems this season has been finishing off their chances, and although they had to be patient against Wigan eight days ago, they were able to secure three points in a professional manner.

Lee Bowyer’s Charlton are full of surprises, and they were the biggest priced EFL winners of last weekend when they upset Leeds at the Valley. The Addicks bounced back from their blip, and with the likes of Josh Cullen and Connor Gallagher in the side, they are always likely to be a threat. However, Lyle Taylor is unlikely to be fit enough to feature.

The Addicks’ games have been generally fairly low-scoring, with none of the last six matches (pre-Swansea) featuring three or more goals. Their defence is generally very reliable, although question marks remain over whether Macualey Bonne is able to adequately replace the absent Montserrat International.

Gallagher Makes Charlton Tick

Lyle Taylor is responsible for five goals and one assist this season and he will be sorely missed here. However, Connor Gallagher is the man that Fulham should keep an eye on. At the tender of age of 19, the Chelsea loanee isn’t going to sparkle every single week, but he tends to have an impact and has already netted three times this year. With 1 assist and an average of 1.8 shots per game, he’ll be the man to get the visiting fans on their feet.

Connor Gallager is a really attractive price at 6/1 with Bet Victor to find the net in this contest.

The Schedule Benefits the Cottagers

The EFL fixture list hasn’t been kind to Charlton with the Londoners being forced to play three times within the space of a week. They will have been in action Sat-Weds-Sat whereas their opponents have faced an ever-so-slightly more leisurely Fri-Tues-Sat schedule.

It will enable Scott Parker to have an extra day with his squad and an extra 24 hours for any bumps and bruises to heal.

At the end of the day, they are professional footballers and should be able to cope with the hectic schedule, but it could give Fulham the edge. Particularly as they have a bigger squad.

Cairney Could be the Key

Tom Cairney had a fairly low key Premier League campaign, however the midfielder is beginning to sparkle once again. He’s scored five times this season, claimed three assists and averages 1.3 shots per game. Fulham take the most third most shots in the division, and Cairney certainly plays a part in that statistic.

Cairney has scored two cracking goals in his last two appearances, and he’s clearly a man full of confidence. During Fulham’s promotion-winning season, he netted just six times and he’s almost matched that total in his opening ten matches.

As a midfielder, he is slightly bigger price and can be backed at 4/1 with Betfair to score anytime in this game.
