AFC Wimbledon vs Rotherham Preview

AFC Wimbledon pulled off the great escape last season, and Wally Downes must take enormous credit for galvanising his side during the last couple of months. They looked down and out in mid-March, but they came roaring back, and they stayed up by the skin of their teeth. They will be confident of avoiding a similar scrap this time around, especially considering Bury and Bolton’s well-documented problems. They’ve re-signed Michael Folivi, who is an excellent addition, and he is a bundle of energy up top. Callum Reilly and Luke O’Neill add some experience whilst Adam Roscrow could be one to keep an eye on. They made themselves hard to beat, and lost just one of their last six home matches at Kingsmeadow at the end of last season. There is a collective spirit about this club, and they’ll be well-backed by a vocal set of supporters once more. They’ve been dealt a tough opening day fixture, but if they can carry last season’s momentum through the summer, they should be hard to beat. This is their first home game on the opening weekend since 2015, and they’ll fancy putting three points on the board.

Rotherham slipped back out of the Championship at the beginning of May, but the Millers put up a decent fight, and their home form was very impressive. However, they record on the road left plenty to be desired and with just one win in 23 games away from South Yorkshire, it is something that Paul Warne will be desperate to improve upon. He can’t call upon Will Vaulks, who has been snapped up by Cardiff, whilst Semi Ajayi has gone to the Hawthornes. Daniel Iverson should be a top keeper at this level, whilst Dan Berlaser is a potentially exciting addition. There are a few unknown quantities in the squad with Jamie Lindsay and Matthew Olosunde and Trevor Clarke all with plenty to prove in League One. There is a collective spirit about Rotherham, which is not too disimilar to todays opponents. Even during their promotion season, their away form was nothing special however, and they lost five of their first seven games on the road.

AFC Wimbledon vs Rotherham Betting Tips

It’s hard to have any faith in the Millers on their travels. Yes, they’re competing at any easier level this time around, but even when they went up via the play-offs, their form on the road did not convince. AFC Wimbledon saw off most visitors at Kingsmeadow last season from March onwards, and they should be able to take that form into this game. I’d always prefer to keep the West Londoners on side whenever they play in front of their own fans, and backing them on the Draw No Bet market at 4/5 is a decent option here.

Although their form on the road was poor, Rotherham cannot be accused of being boring. They delivered plenty of entertainment on their travels, and BTTS landed in 14 of their 23 away matches last season. They failed to score in just one of the last eight, and they’ll be hoping that new signing Freddie Ladapo can fire from the off. It also landed in six of AFC Wimbledon’s last eight games, and I’d expect it to pay out here.
