Schalke endured a tough last season finishing 14th which led to the club replacing Tedesco with David Wagner for the upcoming season. They had a very poor attack, the 4th worst in the league to add to an average defense.

Aside from Wagner, Schalke have picked up the talented center back Kabak from relegated Stuttgart, wingers Raman and Tekpetey from promoted Dusseldorf and Paderborn, and Jonjoe Kenny on loan from Everton. They have also let go of Embolo to Monchengladbach, captain Fahrmann on loan to Norwich and Rudy also on loan to Hoffenheim.

Villareal began a struggling season under former player Javi Calleja who was then replaced by Luis Garcia when they found themselves near the relegation zone. 9 poor games later, Javi Calleja was brought back to take them to safety in the end. Despite their league woes, Villareal made it to the knockout rounds of the Europa League where they were eliminated by Valencia.

Schalke have had a poor preseason with their only win coming against RW Oberhausen. They have drawn against SG Wattenscheid and Twente, and lost against Sevilla, Norwich and Bologna. A large part of their problem has been their defense which has conceded 11 goals and not kept a single clean sheet.

Villareal, on the other hand, have had a much better preseason, winning all 4 of their fixtures so far against West Brom, Levante, Augsburg and FC Koln. They have also looked good going forward scoring at least 14 goals in these 4 games.

Considering Schalke’s defensive woes and Villareal’s great attacking form, we expect Villareal to take this game 3-0.
