Werder Bremen vs Augsburg Preview

Bremen have lost their opening two games of the season, but they’ve played well in each of those two encounters. They’ve taken 43 shots so far, which is more than any other club in the Bundesliga, but only have three goals to show for their efforts. The green and whites problems have largely come at the other end of the field with six goals conceded to Hoffenheim and Dusseldorf, and they have a few injury problems at the back ahead of this one. However, it looks like the impressive Josh Sargent could into the side. He’s played just eight minutes so far this campaign, and he will be chomping at the bit to make the starting XI on Sunday. Florian Kohfeldt does have a great record against Augsburg, and has been victorious in all three match-ups against the Die Fuggerstadter. Whatever happens this season, Bremen will be thoroughly entertaining to watch, and fans at the Weserstadion will be on the edge of their seats once again this weekend. The hosts have kept just one clean sheet at this stadium since October 5th 2018, and they could find it difficult to keep Augsburg off the score-sheet once again.

Augsburg began their season witha  5-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. They took the lead within the first couple of minutes, but their defence was soon carved open by the yellow and blacks lethal attack. They followed that defeat with a 1-1 draw against Paderborn, with summer signing Ruben Vargas getting off the mark for the campaign. Augsburg lost 4-0 here last season, but outside of that heavy loss, they do possess a decent record at this stadium. They’ve won four of their last eight visits to the Weserstadion, although they don’t look in sparkling form at the moment. They do welcome back Alfred Finnbogason, and they always look more of a threat when the Icelandic striker starts a game. They’ve won just two Bundesliga games since March, although both of those victories were thoroughly convincing. They kept just two clean sheets on the road during the whole of last season, and they look defensively vulnerable here.

Bremen have shown plenty of attacking intent in their opening couple of games despite the end result. Werder should attack throughout this game, and Niclas Fullkrug certainly looks a decent addition to the side. He’s looked sharp, and I expect the hosts to come through this tie. Augsburg look suceptible at the back, and although I fully expect them to breach the Werder defence at some point during this game, I think they’ll suffer their second straight loss at this stadium.

Goals are to be expected, and William Hill are offering 4/5 on Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals in this one. Going back to last season, this would have landed in five of the last six Bundesliga games for the hosts, and it would also have paid out in three of the last four for Augsburg. Four of the last six games between this pair have landed BTTS and featured three or more goals. It is an odds-on selection, but it should land once again.
