Champions League Group Winners Accumulator Tip: 125/1 for these 8 teams to win their group

Champions League betting tips

The Champions League took a very different look in the knock-out stages last season but hopefully we will be able to get things back to some kind of normality by this season’s last 16. First though, we can try and predict the winner of the group stages which start this week.

The 2020/21 Champions League group stages kick-off on Tuesday with two 5.55pm matches involving Dynamo Kiev v Juventus and Zenit v Club Brugge. There is then six more matches before we do it all again on Wednesday. Teams will be looking to get off to a good start in the competition but there are some tough groups for the Premier League teams to negotiate and Manchester United in particular, will have their work cut out in Group H.

Holders Bayern Munich get their campaign underway in a tasty Group home tie with Atletico Madrid and a win there would put them well on their way to winning Group A. Elsewhere, it looks like a shootout between Porto and Manchester City for Group C glory and Liverpool will have a tough job in topping Group D ahead of both Ajax and Atalanta.

Champions League Group Stage Draw 2020/21

Group A: Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, RB Salzburg, Lokomotiv Moscow

Group B: Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Borussia Monchengladbach

Group C: Porto, Manchester City, Olympiakos, Marseille

Group D: Liverpool, Ajax, Atalanta, Midtjylland

Group E: Sevilla, Chelsea, Krasnodar, Rennes

Group F: Zenit, Borussia Dortmund, Lazio, Club Brugge

Group GJuventus, Barcelona, Dynamo Kiev, Ferencvaros

Group H: PSG, Manchester United, RB Leipzig, Istanbul Basaksehir

Holders to ease into the last 16

Putting short-priced selections into bets like this always comes with a risk, but at 2/5, Bayern Munich look assured to finish Group A in top spot. They were faultless in last season’s group – winning all six matches and scoring 24 goals. Their main challengers this season are likely to be Atletico Madrid, with RB Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow expected to battle it out for third place.

Chelsea to top Group E ahead of Sevilla

Chelsea have been handed one of the kinder draws of the English sides but they will still need to be at their best against Sevilla. Rennes finished last season very strongly to get into the Champions League places and have started this campaign well too. However, Frank Lampard’s team have the experience and now Timo Werner is off and running in-front of goal he can fire Chelsea to top spot.

Sevilla are likely to be their nearest challengers but the La Liga side seem to do much better in the Europa League than this competition. Krasnador will provide some decent opposition but they are unlikely to threaten the top two too much.

Haaland to fire Dortmund to the top of Group F

There is a new superstar on the world stage and he can ensure Borussia Dortmund get into the last 16 by winning this group. Last season they were handed a really tough group including Barcelona and Inter Milan and managed to finish second. They should go one better this time around against easier opposition.

Zenit and Lazio will provide decent competition for Dortmund but their Champions League experience and explosive fire-power from the likes of Haaland and Jadon Sancho can ensure a top place finish and the theoretical easier draw in the last 16.

Can Manchester United get out of the Group of Death?

It hasn’t been a great start to the season for Manchester United but recent wins against Brighton and Newcastle have done a little to soften the blow of the 6-1 loss to Spurs. They face a tough Champions League Group including PSG and RB Leipzig and will do well to top the table here. Istanbul Basaksehir make up the four and they’re no pushovers themselves after lifting the Turkish championship last season.

PSG are the rightful favourites to top this group and they usually qualify with ease so last year’s finalists are the first selection in our Champions League group winners accumulator. Manchester United are a tempting 12/5 to miss out on the knock-out stage.

The other Champions League Group Winner Predictions

As well as the featured four selections, Inter Milan might be a good outside bet to get the better of Real Madrid in Group B. Borussia Monchengladbach will also provide stiff opposition and in what looks like a wide-open group, the Italians might be worth a bet.

Manchester City are usually strong going forward in this competition but defensively they’re a worry, especially in the latter stages. The draw has been kind to them though and they should win Group C without too many problems.

The news that Virgil Van Dijk will miss the whole season with injury is a massive blow to Liverpool’s Champions League hopes but they should still be good enough to get past Ajax and Atalanta in another open looking group. Ajax have lost Van De Beek and Ziyech this summer so are not expected to be as strong as two years ago when they almost reached the final. Atalanta score plenty of goals and can finish second behind Jurgen Klopp’s 2019 winners.

One of the most mouth-watering fixtures on the Champions League group stage card is Barcelona vs Juventus or Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo. This group will be a shootout between these two sides and neither of them have had the best start to the season. I’d actually have a bet on Juve topping this group, which should be dominated by these two European giants.
