The second legs of the 2019 Championship play-offs take place over the next couple of days, with West Brom, Aston Villa, Leeds and Derby County all still in with a chance of qualifying for the Wembley showpiece on Monday 27th May.
Things get underway with West Brom vs Aston Villa tonight, with Villa holding a slender 2-1 advantage after the first leg at Villa Park. Dwight Gayle got the opening goal in that game, but was later sent off for a second bookable offence and he’ll be a big miss for the hosts tonight. Villa had already gone 2-1 up by the time Gayle had seen red thanks to two goals in four minutes from substitute Conor Hourihane and a Tammy Abraham penalty.
In our West Brom vs Aston Villa predictions we’re siding with an away win here, which will give Aston Villa the chance to get back in the Premier League for the first time since they were relegated in 2016. It was the first time they had been relegated from the top division of English football since the 1986/87 season.
We have combined our betting tips for the match to make up a bet365 bet builder for tonight’s game – you will get odds of 17/2 for the three picks to all come in.
The bet starts with Aston Villa to win the match – West Brom are without their main striking option Dwight Gayle and that is a real blow for the Baggies. They’ve only got a 33% win rate when he has been missing. Dean Smith’s side are in good form heading into tonight’s match and their end of season run of 11 wins in 13 matches got them their play-off place. They had won five away matches in a row before that bizarre match at Elland Road, where Leeds allowed Villa to equalise.
Jack Grealish to score is the second part of our request a bet betting tip. He has scored six times already this season and his last three goals have come away from home. Tammy Abraham is the shortest priced Villa player in the anytime scorer odds but he doesn’t score away from home as often as he does at Villa Park.
Finally. we need over 2.5 goals to be scored in the game to round off our bet. This happened in the first leg and with West Brom knowing they need to get on the scoresheet, it could open the tie up. Three of the last five meetings between these sides at the Hawthorns have ended in 2-2 draws!
The second Championship play-off is between Leeds and Derby and the first game was not without controversy. Derby were awarded what looked like a clean penalty with 13 minutes remaining, only for Craig Pawson to eventually overturn his original decision. It left Derby manager Frank Lampard fuming. He was already upset after Leeds’ Mateusz Klich appeared to headbutt Fikayo Tomori but he was only booked.
This could all make for a fiery second leg at Elland Road this week and in our Leeds vs Derby predictions, we’re betting on a home victory, to send Leeds United back to Wembley for the first time since 2008. They’ve not been in the Premier League since the 2003/04 season and have had some turmoil both on and off the pitch in that time, dropping all the way back to League One before finally getting into the Championship. They now have a real shot at getting into the Premier League after missing out to Sheffield United for automatic promotion.
We’re expecting fireworks in this one so one of the selections on our bet builder is for Derby midfielder Duane Holmes to be carded. He was booked in the first leg and has picked up eight yellows in the Championship this season. The second leg of the bet is for Leeds to win and we’re also adding in a bit of an outsider in the anytime goalscorer odds. Mateusz Klich, the controversial figure from the first leg, has scored some big goals for Leeds this season and has already scored against Derby in the season proper. Two goals in Leeds’ last two regular season matches puts him in good form and we’re backing him to score against Derby tonight.
