Charlton vs Sunderland predictions and betting tips for Sunday’s League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium. Can Sunderland make it second time lucky at the national stadium on Sunday?
Sunderland kept back-to-back clean sheets in the League One play-off semi-finals.
The Black Cats beat Lee Bowyer’s side on the opening day of the campaign.
Charlton lost 3-2 AET to Doncaster in the second leg, but progressed via a penalty shoot-out.

The League One Play-Off final is a fascinating match-up between Charlton and Sunderland, and will evoke memories of 1998’s 4-4 between the pair. We aren’t expecting eight goals this time around, but it is likely to be another entertaining 90 minutes.
Sunderland have struggled to keep sides off the score-sheet this season, and their lack of clean sheets saw them drop out of the automatic promotion picture, however they were foot perfect against Portsmouth. Pompey, who had netted 83 goals across the course of the season could not find a way through, and looked devoid of ideas in the final third.
Jack Ross must take credit for organising his side in such a robust fashion, and he will have another tough job keeping the likes of Lyle Taylor and Joe Aribo quiet here.
The Black Cats also have the advantage of having already been to Wembley this season, and despite losing on penalties to Portsmouth, they can harness that disappointment, and use that experience to good effect here.
There is something quite streetwise about Sunderland with the likes of Lee Cattermole and Grant Leadbitter back in the side, whilst Jon McLaughlin has proved to be an excellent addition between the sticks.
Charlton were expected to beat Doncaster at the Valley in the second leg of their semi-final contest, but despite scoring early, they struggled to cope with Donny’s movement, and they looked tired at times. It was a disappointing outcome for the Addicks, and despite coming through on penalties, they must regroup and ensure they don’t allow themselves to be overrun by Sunderland.
There won’t be much between these two sides, and it should be a very close contest. However, Sunderland’s previous experience in West London, coupled with their determination not to rack up back-to-back defeats in West London should be enough to see them through. They have a number of experienced players in the squad, who should be able to step up and help their side come through this tough examination.
They might not be able to book their place in the Championship within 90 minutes, and may need an additional 30 mins here. Therefore, Sunderland to Lift the Trophy looks to be the best option, and it’s available at a shade of odds-on. Sunderland to Lift the Trophy is 10/11 with 888Sport and it’s the first of our League One betting tips.
It’s been a tough season for Chris Maguire, who hasn’t been a regular starter for Sunderland this season, but he has slowly endeared himself to the fans on Wearside, and he could have a big say here.
The former Oxford man is a unique talent, but penchant for winding the opposition up can often take centre stage instead. He scored Sunderland’s winner against Pompey, and if given a start here, he is a potential match-winner. With the fitness of Aidan McGeady unknown, this game may require someone like Maguire to produce a moment of magic to light up Wembley.
Sunderland haven’t got a striker who is a regular goalscorer, and they have relied upon goals from all over the pitch. Maguire could relish playing a starring role in this one. Chris Maguire to Score anytime is the second of our Charlton vs Sunderland predictions, and he is available at 14/5 with 888Sport.
Unlike the League Two play-off final, I do believe that we will see a couple of goals in this tie. Games between these two sides are generally very entertaining, and they played out 1-1 and 2-1 scorelines this season.
Amazingly, Charlton have seen 63% of their games feature two or three goals this season, a figure which rose to 70% when they were away from home. Sunderland have seen 70% of their games end with the same number of goals, and that could be the best way to play this.
This would have landed in each of the two meetings between the sides this season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this one go the same way.
2 or 3 goals is the best option, and it is available at 11/10 with 888Sport.
