Crewe vs Plymouth Preview

Crewe finished perfectly mid-table under Dave Artell last season, and the Railwaymen endured a topsy-turvy season. They won 19 times during the campaign, with 15 of those victories coming at home. They were extremely effective on their own patch, and won four of their last five games here. The fans will be hoping to see their side get off to a quick start, and continue where they left off. Crewe played some decent stuff at home, and they also racked up some memorable results (6-1 vs Crawley and 6-0 vs Morecambe). Supporters can’t expect another 6-0 romp on the opening day of the season, but they’ll be feeling reasonably confident that they can get something from this fixture. They’ve been playing some good stuff in pre-season with the likes of Callum Ainley and Charlie Kirk amongst the goals. The Railwaymen still look potentially light up-top with Chris Porter likely to be leading the line once again, but they do offer plenty of creativity from midfield. Daniel Powell is direct, whilst plenty is expected of versatile right-back Perry Ng.

Plymouth will look completely different this season, with a number of new recruits. Some sceptics have labelled them the Devon Bury, after manager Ryan Lowe pilfered six players from his former club. His most eye-catching recruit is the imperious Danny Mayor, who was one of the best players at this level last season. He will combine with Byron Moore and Dom Telford whilst Callum McFadzean and Will Aimson will help solidify them at the back. The Pilgrims will be looking to shake off the relegation hangover, and they’ll be hoping to start with three points on their travels. There’s definitely a feel-good factor around the club, although there’s plenty of pressure on rookie boss Ryan Lowe. The scouser enjoyed a successful season at Gigg Lane, although his side weren’t as effective on the road. They have a lot of long away trips once again, and he will have to ensure that his side don’t come down with travel sickness.

Crewe vs Plymouth Betting Tips

This is a tricky tie, and the odds suggest that there isn’t much between the two teams. Crewe got off to the perfect start last season, but this is a tougher assignment. They were very impressive at home, and their young side should be able to express themselves here at Gresty Road. Plymouth may take a couple of weeks to find their feet, and they are far from a shoo-in to collect three points from this tie.

Crewe lost just six times here last season, and with very few squad changes, I expect them to be equally tough to beat in front of their own fans. Crewe Draw No Bet provides us with some value at Evens, and we will get our money back if it ends all-square.

Over 2.5 Goals landed in 57% of Crewe’s home matches last season, and it paid out in four of their last five matches here. Plymouth should offer a threat, and even though they may not be as effective on the road, they should have enough to find the back of the net. The bookies are expecting a cagey affair, but Crewe didn’t do many of those in Cheshire last year.
