Iceland have had a reasonably solid qualification campaign so far. Their 4-0 loss to France was disappointing but not unexpected. A 2-1 win over Turkey boosted their hopes of qualification but a potentially damaging 4-2 loss to Albania last time out could have scuppered their chances. They’ll probably need to win all their remaining matches to qualify, with Turkey’s match in France looking set to go a long way to deciding this group.
Just three points ahead of Iceland, France are still in a precarious position. Their shock 2-0 loss to Turkey derailed their campaign but a win against Iceland could put them six points clear with just three games to go. A loss and it’s just goal difference separating the two sides. The World Champions still have to play Turkey at home and if they can avoid defeat in this match and beat Turkey, that should see them safely through to next summer’s tournament.
There’s a lot more riding on this game than the French would have liked. It’s not a must-win game but it’s not far off. A 4-0 win over Iceland in Paris will give France confidence heading into this and in truth they have a far superior squad. That should be enough to get them over the line and all but assure qualification. France to win is at 9/20 but we’re going to go with France to win to nil at odds of 13/10 with Bet Victor. You could add France to win straight up in your footy accumulator bet but 9/20 is too short for a single.
Incredibly, Olivier Giroud is France’s third-highest goalscorer of all time. The Chelsea striker has surpassed the likes of Zinedine Zidane and David Trezeguet and is just five shy of Michel Platini. Giroud has already scored three times in qualification and is priced at 5/4 to score here. He may not be able to get into Frank Lampard’s Chelsea starting 11 and he divides opinion around the French media and fans, but nobody can argue with his goalscoring record and he looks a good bet for an anytime goalscorer tip in this one.
Iceland will make it tough, but France have more than enough firepower to get through. With qualification virtually assured with a win, the French will be highly motivated to get over the line here and the World Cup winners will expect to win this one. A 2-0 win is priced at 6/1 with Bet Victor here.
