Switzerland vs Iceland Predictions and Betting Tips – Hosts Should Be Able to Protect Their Imperious Home Record

Nations League predictions

The UEFA Nations League continues with Switzerland vs Iceland on Saturday and it should be an intriguing battle between two sides with contrasting styles.  See our Switzerland vs Iceland predictions for the match below.

Switzerland vs Iceland Pundits Betting Tips

It’s been a whirlwind 24 months for Iceland and they enjoyed success at the Euros and modest form at the World Cup but they are struggling to recapture that winning spirit which made them incredibly difficult to beat. They haven’t won in any competition since beating Indonesia in January and they have been defeated by the likes of Norway, Peru and the Czech Republic in friendlies. If they want to progress in the UEFA Nations Cup the latest football pundits predictions say they are going to have to get back to form quickly. Heimir Halgrimsson quit just weeks after the World Cup with Erik Hamren taking charge for his first competitive fixture.

It remains to be seen whether he can get them back to winning ways but he faces an uphill challenge against Switzerland. The Swiss haven’t lost at home since May 2016 and haven’t been defeated in a competitive fixture since losing to England in September 2014. They are likely to keep it tight once again and there has been very little upheaval since the World Cup. They impressed in Russia and were fairly unlucky to exit against Sweden. They’ve won two of their last three fixtures at home to Iceland and I think they can continue that fine run of form here. Switzerland Win is 7/10 with Betfred and that’s the first of our Switzerland vs Iceland predictions.

Football Tips

Switzerland are tough to break down and Vladimir Petkovic’s side have always set up in a similar pragmatic way. They will make it difficult for Iceland who haven’t been creating many chances in their recent outings. They keep many clean sheets and Iceland may find it difficult to get on the score-sheet. For all of their issues going forward, Iceland are also well-drilled and if they don’t stray too far from their previous tactics, the Swiss may have to be patient. Switzerland have conceded just twice in eight games but Under 2.5 Goals is a little short so we’re opting for a 0-0 half-time score-line in this game and that can be backed at a decent price of 21/20 with William Hill. You can use their £30 free bet to back this selection.

One criticism that has been leveled at Switzerland in recent years is that they lack a killer touch and they still don’t have a genuinely potent striker to call upon. Seferovic gets a few goals but they score a large majority of their goals from midfield and set-pieces are also very important to their style. Liverpool’s summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri may not have enjoyed much game time at Anfield but he’s always capable on the International stage and he can play a significant role here. The diminutive play-maker is available at 13/5 to score anytime in this fixture with Betfair.

Switzerland vs Iceland Betting Preview

As the home side, Switzerland were always going to be short in the betting. They are 7/10 with Coral and could shorten further before kick-off. They are a tough nut to crack and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them win with another clean sheet here. Both Teams to Score? No is available at 6/10.

Iceland have pulled off plenty of shocks in their time and they could spring another surprise here. They are priced at 9/2 to take all three points and it’s 13/5 for these two sides to cancel one another out and take a point a-piece.

Many are predicting a straightforward victory for Switzerland and a 2-0 win is priced at 11/2.

Our prediction Xherdan Shaqiri remains the favourite in the first goalscorer market but there are many other players who could find the back of the net in this one. Haris Seferovic pops up with a few strikes and he should get some joy against the Iceland defence. He is 11/2 with Bet365 to grab the first goal of the game.
