Netherlands vs England Preview

Kick-off time: 7.45pm

Date: Thursday 6th June 2019

Competition: UEFA Nations League

Venue: Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques (Guimarães)

The domestic season might be over, but these two national sides have gathered in Portugal for the Nations League semi-finals looking for a place in Sunday’s big final. England are slight favourites going into the match at odds of 6/4 with Betfred. The draw is 9/4 and the odds for a Dutch win are 21/10.

The Netherlands got to this point thanks to two late goals in Germany from Quincey Promes and Liverpool’s Virgin Van Vijk – they were 2-0 down with five minutes to go before the comeback sealed their place in the semi-finals, and relegated Germany in the process.

England also left it late to qualify, beating Croatia 2-1 at Wembley thanks to late goals from Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane, meaning they got to the semi-finals ahead of Spain.

Netherlands Team News

The Dutch are getting back on track after missing out on the last two tournaments. They got to the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup before missing out on both Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018, however manager Ronald Koeman has got a strong squad of players to choose from now with Van Dijk proving a colossus at the back for club and country. They won both home matches in their group against France and Germany, but lost in France and picked up that late draw against their rivals, and conceded two goals in each of their two away. They’ve more recently lost 3-2 against Germany in Euro 2020 qualifying, as well as beating Belarus.

Koeman has some fantastic youngsters in his squad including  Matthijs de Ligt, Donny van de Beek and Frenkie de Jong from the Ajax team who did so well in the Champions League this season, and Manchester United flop Memphis Depay has been on fire in Ligue 1. Wijnaldum has joined up with the squad after winning the Champions League and should start too.

England Team News

It is an exciting time to be an England fan and after they made it all the way to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia, Gareth Southgate’s men now have a chance to get to the final of the first ever Nations League. Since the World Cup they have continued their upward curve and their two most recent matches have been emphatic Euro 2020 qualifying wins against Czech Republic (5-0) and Montenegro (5-1).

Southgate has picked another young squad for the finals, including Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling who will give him great options out wide. Harry Kane has declared himself fit to play to the captain should lead the line in Portugal. A lot of England players were involved in the Champions League final including Dele Alli, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Danny Rose, so Southgate might have to use his full squad across the two matches.

Watch England’s impressive goal on their way to beating Spain 3-2 away from home.

Netherlands vs England – who is a good anytime goalscorer bet?

With Harry Kane declaring himself fit to play, he is the obvious choice when it comes to an anytime goalscorer tip here, however it remains to be seen if he has got his match sharpness back after a poor display in the Champions League final. For that reason, it might be worth taking a chance on somebody else for our England vs Netherlands prediction in this one.

For the Dutch, Memphis Depay has to be watched closely because he’s scored seven goals in his last eight international matches including three in his last two. The Ajax star Donny Van de Beek scored against Spurs in the semi-final and he’s 11/2 with Betfred to score vs England.

However, for our selection we’re going for the man who scored the goal on the video above. Raheem Sterling has had another brilliant season domestically, helping Manchester City do the domestic treble, and he’s also scored four goals in his last two England appearances, including a hat-trick against Czech Republic. The best odds for Sterling to score against Netherlands are 11/5 with Coral.

What is the best betting tip for Netherlands vs England?

We’re going for an England win in this game as this young side continues to impress. They have scored 10 goals in their last two matches and have already beaten Spain away from home in the Nations League. Holland do still leak goals even with Van Dijk in the side and England’s pace out wide could really trouble a team managed by a manager who loves to play on the front-foot. England will look to hit Holland on the break and they should have enough quality up front to book their place in the Nations League final on Sunday.
