Newport vs West Ham Preview

Despite Mike Flynn writing off his side’s chances against Gillingham in the 1st round of the EFL Cup, the Exiles still managed to come through on penalties, and book themselves a glamour tie with Premier League outfit West Ham. It’ll be interesting to see how the passionate Welshman approaches this tie in front of the Sky Sports cameras. Newport were 1-0 winners against table-toppers Crewe at Rodney Parade at the weekend, and although they weren’t at their best in that clash, they still managed to keep yet another clean sheet. They will be very hard to break down once again, and despite losing some of their key players this summer, they have replaced them more than adequately. Over the last couple of seasons, they’ve seen off Leicester and Middlesbrough here, and held Spurs to a draw. Despite being the 7/1 outsiders, it is dangerous to write them off in any competition. Flynn admits that his side need to improve in order to beat the Hammers, but with a decent crowd behind them, they should be able to give the top flight outfit plenty to think about.

Last season, West Ham overcame a potentially tricky cup tie, beating AFC Wimbledon 3-1 at Kingsmeadow. Although he made changes, Manuel Pellegrini still named a very strong side which included Lucas Perez, Issa Diop and Aaron Cresswell. He is likely to rotate once again, but we expect the Hammers to hand a few opportunities to fringe players. Jack Wilshire is one player who is likely to play some part in this EFL Cup fixture, and he will be hoping to take this game by the scruff of the neck in the centre of the park. He will be up against the highly combative Joss Labadie, and that will be an extremely interesting battle. WHU also beat Macclesfield en-route to the third round last season, but none of their fixtures were as tough as this one. Despite losing on the opening day of the season, Pellegrini’s men have picked up four points from their last two fixtures, and were much the better side against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Newport vs West Ham Predictions

It’s never advised to write off Newport. Mike Flynn’s side will be battling from the first whistle through to the last, and they can be backed +2 on the handicap at around 4/6. However, we’re going to be a little more ambitious here. Newport +1 is available at 2/1, and we’re backing the Exiles to take this game at a penalty shoot-out at least. No side fancies playing at Rodney Parade on a Tuesday night, and although they have a much higher class of player, they won’t find this easy. +1 Handicap suggests that the hosts can remain competitive throughout.

Newport’s front two will cause problems throughout this tie, and Padraig Amond was back amongst the goals at the weekend. He is the designated penalty taker, and could find the back of the net once more. The experienced striker struck against Manchester City last season, and he is worth backing a decent price once more.
