Preston vs Wigan Preview

Preston’s opening day defeat at Millwall was slightly worrying with the Lilywhites failing to create many chances throughout the 90 minutes. Alex Neil’s men finished with an XG of 0.2 which was astonishingly poor. Everything they tried, failed to materialise, and they’ll need to be far better in the final third on Saturday. They are always more effective at home, and they lost just five of their 23 matches at Deepdale last year. However, they won just eight times, and often failed to finish sides off. Although they’ve brought in reinforcements over the summer months, their form at the end of last season was also concerning. It now means that PNE have won just once since March 30th, and that came against now-relegated Ipswich. That’s four points from the last 27 available, and although they are priced up as favourites for this all-Lancashire clash, I’d want to see a bit more from them before backing them. Luckily, Paul Cook has lost all four of his previous encounters with against Preston, and they are facing a side who have kept just one clean sheet in 23 away matches

Wigan got off to the perfect start last weekend with a 3-2 victory over Cardiff City to win the bet we placed with the Unibet sign-up bonus. The Latics made a sluggish start, but they were able to turn the match on its head, and dominate the second period. Paul Cook’s men were poor away from home last season, and they’ll be hoping to put that right this season. The Scouser was delighted with his side’s workrate, and he’s added beanpole striker Keiffer Moore to his squad this week. Josh Windass and Joe Garner put in decent performances last weekend, although their defence still does look a little shaky at times. They will want to erase memories of their 4-0 defeat at this ground last season, and I’d expect them to remain competitive throughout the 90 minutes. Jamal Lowe should certainly some energy to proceedings, and Wigan appear to have far more offensive options this season.

Preston vs Wigan Betting Tips

Preston’s poor run of form, which stretches back to March is a huge concern, and at 11/10, I won’t be backing them. PNE created little last week, and although they are better suited to playing in Lancashire, I think Wigan will give them a tough time. They drew 10 times at home last season, and putting games to bed could be a major issue again this year. Backing this game to end all-square at 23/10 with Bet Victor looks the best option here.

Whilst Preston barely troubled the Millwall goal last weekend, they always create chances at home. They are also coming up against one of the worst defences on the road, and should have plenty of joy here. Whilst converting chances is a problem at times, the likes of Sean Maguire and Jayden Stockley should find themselves in decent goalscoring positions throughout this clash, so I’d expect them to avoid a second successive blank. Both Teams to Score? Yes at around 4/5 looks like a decent bet.
