Salford City vs Stevenage Preview
Graham Alexander’s Salford City kick off their EFL campaign on Saturday lunchtime when they take on Stevenage at the Peninsula Stadium. Big-spending Salford have actually had a fairly transfer window by their own standards, although the addition of midfielder Richie Towell really catches the eye. Joey Jones and his namesake Dan should certainly help strengthen the back-line whilst Kyle Letheren is a decent option as back-up goalkeeper. Alexander’s men secured their promotion at Wembley in May, and they’ll be looking to bring that momentum into League Two. It’s a tough division, and the Ammies won’t simply stroll through. There are a number of sides who will make it tough for them, and they face a difficult assignment on the opening weekend of the campaign. It’s hard to guage how ready they will be for this challenge, but they have a decent squad with plenty of EFL experience, and although they’ve been priced up prominently in the ante-post markets, they may just need a couple of weeks to acclimatise.

Stevenage just missed out on the play-offs last season, but they ended the campaign in brilliant form. Dino Maamria is a very affable manager, and a hugely popular figure in this part of Hertfordshire, and he will have done his reputation no harm with last season’s efforts. They won five of their last six games in League Two last season, and they haven’t been defeated on the road since February 9th. They picked up 16 points on their travels in 2019, and will be hard to penetrate in this opening fixture. Chris Stokes arrives from Bury having securing back-to-back promotions from this level, whilst Tyler Denton is a promising youngster who joins from Leeds. Charlie Carter is an interesting addition, and he could go on to become one of the most creative players in the division. Maamria hasn’t changed much over the course of the summer, and that’s because he hasn’t need to. They were close to making it into the top seven last year, and many are expecting them to be there or thereabouts once again.
Salford City vs Stevenage Betting Tips
It’s always hard to judge a newly promoted side on their first EFL outing, but Salford do look well-equipped for a top-half battle this season. However, despite being odds-on for this game, I don’t think it will be easy, and picking up a single point instead of three might be their best possible outcome here. Stevenage are tough, and they have plenty of energy. They’re potentially a little underrated by the market, so backing the draw is a sensible idea. It’s available at 11/4.
Although Stevenage were excellent on the road towards the back-end of last season, they did have an issue keeping clean sheets. They managed just a single shut-out on their travels since late-October, and that came against a Grimsby side who had downed tools for the summer. Salford will be expecting to find the back of the net here, and they should be able to find a way past the visitors. Stevenage netted 14 goals in seven away games at the back of last season, and the combination of Kurtis Guthrie and Danny Newton will offer a threat throughout.
Both Teams to Score? Yes looks a decent option at a shade of odds-on.
