Maribor vs AIK Preview

Maribor made it through to the UEFA Champions League group stage back in 2017 and were drawn alongside Liverpool, Sevilla and Spartak Moscow. They picked up just three points during that period, and the 7-0 hammering by Liverpool aside, they were tough to beat on home soil. Both Sevilla and Spartak failed to pick up maximum points in Slovenia, and they have rightfully been priced up as favourites for this 2^nd round qualifying tie.

They swept aside Valur during the first round, keeping clean sheets in both games, and they’ve been drawn against high-flying Allsvenskan outfit AIK.

They’re only two games into their regular season, and many of the new signings are still bedding into the squad, but despite a high turnover of players, they will be fancied to take a lead into the second leg in Solna.

AIK are having a mixed season in the Allsvenskan. Last year’s champions have been tough to beat as always, but they are lacking a little bit of zip in the final third, and their 2-1 defeat against Aarat was hugely worrying. Luckily, Rikard Norling’s side prevailed in the second leg, and they won’t find it easy making the trip to Slovenia.

The one advantage that AIK have is that they half-way through their season, and they are used to playing regular games at the moment.

However, it’s a hectic schedule for the top flight side, and some squad rotation may be required here.

Maribor lost their opening game of the season at home, and looked lethargic throughout. However, they showed no signs of rustiness against Valur, and I’d expect them to be too streetwise at Ljudski vrt for their opponents.

AIK will look to keep things tight, and are likely to let the hosts have plenty of the ball. The visitors would be happy to take a goalless draw back to Solna, but Maribor will put plenty of pressure on their defence.

The visitors have already lost at Orebro and Goteborg this season, and they were recently unable to find a way past lowly Sundsvall. Their away form is a bit of a concern, and therefore they aren’t back-able.

The draw is a danger, but Maribor cannot afford to go to Sweden without a lead, and they should have what it takes to find a way through. They are 7/5 to win, and that looks like a decent option.

At a bigger price, it’s 3/1 for Maribor to Win a 1 Goal Margin, and it’s hard to imagine them cruising to victory in this Champions League qualifier.
