With it already confirmed that whoever comes out on top in Group E will be in line for a Round of 16 showdown against the runner up in Group F, both Spain and Germany will know how important a gold medal finish could be.

As things stand, it appears most likely that either of the former world champions will most likely be set for a meeting against 2018 finalists Croatia at the Al Janoub Stadium on December 5th.

However, with many across the globe tipping European giants Belgium as a standout pick to storm their way to top spot in Group F, we could be in for a heavyweight battle 24 hours later in Al Rayyan.

Group E: A Look at the Nations

Listed below we have found all of the key pre-tournament information that you will need to know before Group E gets underway. We have also searched across all the board to find you the vital statistics for betting on the upcoming fixtures, whether it is a traditional BTTS market or correct score.

Spain

While Spain might have made real history in 2010 as they claimed their first world title, it is no secret that La Roja are in the midst of a transition under Luis Enrique.

With the former Barcelona boss electing to take the European heavyweights in a far more youthful direction after shipping out the likes of Sergio Ramos, Spain have gained plenty of plaudits over the past 12 months as they gained a reputation for their gritty displays.

Signing off their pre-World Cup preparations with a 1-0 victory against Portugal on foreign soil, the Group E contenders also booked their Nations League knockout stage ticket.

Losing just one of their previous 10 appearances across all competitions – a run that stems back to October 2021 – Spain have a host of blossoming superstars who should be relishing their chance to shine on the world stage come November.

Spearheaded by the likes of Barcelona midfielder Pedri, La Roja could fancy their chances of springing a real World Cup upset this year.

Spain Statistics:

FIFA World Ranking: 7

World Cup Appearances: 15

Highest Finish: Winner (2010)

Manager: Luis Enrique

Captain: Sergio Busquets

Star Player: Pedri (Barcelona)

Germany

While Germany might historically also hold a fearsome reputation on the major tournament stage, it is fair to say that the former world champions are in the midst of an extended downbeat run.

Making the trip out to Qatar without Joachim Löw in their dugout and now under the guidance of ex-Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick, the Nationalelf have continued to tumble down the FIFA rankings and it appears that there is already some pressure on the 57-year-old’s shoulders.

Although Germany might have signed off their pre-World Cup preparations with an action-packed 3-3 draw away at England, Flick’s side managed to muster just a single victory from any of their six Nations League appearances – a run that was highlighted by a shock 1-0 loss against Hungary on September 23rd.

Although Germany might be set to make their 20th appearance at a World Cup finals this year, they could still be haunted by their nightmare display out in Russia back in 2018.

Shockingly crashing out at the group stage, Germany will be desperate to avoid another Group E collapse this time around.

Germany Statistics:

FIFA World Ranking: 11

World Cup Appearances: 19

Highest Finish: Winner (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014)

Manager: Hansi Flick

Captain: Manuel Neuer

Star Player: Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich)

Japan

While Japan might have had to settle for a second-place finish behind Saudi Arabia on World Cup qualifying duties, the Samurai Blue booked their Qatar ticket without breaking much of a sweat.

Although they might know that they face a real uphill struggle if they’re to clinch a place out of Group E this year, Japan do hold what is an impressive record while on the world stage.

Shocking many out in Russia back in 2018 as they found a route to the Round of 16 ahead of both Poland and African giants Senegal, Moriyasu’s side have in fact booked their knockout stage ticket in three of their last four World Cup appearances.

Likewise, along with being led out by former Southampton defender Maya Yoshida in November, Japan also have a string of European-based stars in their squad.

Alongside ex-Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino, the Blues will also be calling on Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu and Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo to lead their charge in Qatar.

Japan Statistics:

FIFA World Ranking: 24

World Cup Appearances: 6

Highest Finish: Round of 16 (2002, 2010, 2018)

Manager: Hajime Moriyasu

Captain: Maya Yoshida

Star Player: Takumi Minamino (Monaco)

Costa Rica:

With the World Cup groups decided back in April, Costa Rica would have been more than aware that they have been hit with an unenviable task when they make the trip out to Qatar.

However, while Luis Fernando Suárez’s side might be seen as a landslide pick to finish bottom in Group E, they have enjoyed a largely impressive spell over recent times and the mood in their camp should be at a high.

Eventually punching their World Cup ticket after a 1-0 victory against New Zealand earlier in the year, Costa Rica also secured their third consecutive ticket to the finals.

While they might have the vastly experienced PSG keeper Keylor Navas starting between the sticks this year, Suárez’s squad should be bracing themselves for a huge challenge in the Middle East.

Although a knockout stage spot might seem a tad unrealistic given their heavyweight opposition, Los Ticos should be looking to challenge Japan for a bronze medal finish in Group E.

Costa Rica Statistics:

FIFA World Ranking: 31

World Cup Appearances: 5

Highest Finish: Quarter Finals (2014)

Manager: Luis Fernando Suárez

Captain: Bryan Ruiz

Star Player: Keylor Navas (PSG)
