Reasons for the League Winners Acca

Below you will see a write up of the reasons for why we have picked each time to win their respective leagues in the Football League, starting with the Championship.

Championship Winner – Fulham

It looks set to be a very open title-race this season in the Championship, with questions over the majority of sides at the top. Cardiffand Huddersfield might need a season or two to recalibrate and adjust back to life in the second tier whilst Leeds should be up there. However, FULHAM have kept the majority of their squad, and there is certainly enough talent to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Keeping hold of Aleksandar Mitrovic was a significant statement of intent, and if Tom Cairney can recapture the form of 2017-18, then he could make all the difference this campaign. They haven’t done much in the way of recruitment, although the addition of Ivan Cavaleiro is a significant one.

Scott Parker is untested in this arena, but he certainly looks the part, and the former midfielder did help Fulham tighten up towards the end of last season. The Cottagers conceded just a single goal in their last four PL matches, and if they can keep things as secure this season, they could be difficult to beat.

It won’t be easy this season, and I can’t foresee any side running away with the title, but Fulham look the strongest of the title contenders. As long as last season hasn’t taken too much out of them, they should be able to start quickly, and Parker’s men look a far more reliable prospect than the majority of the frontrunners.

League One Winner – Portsmouth

The League One summit looks fairly trappy this season, with serious question marks over all of the frontrunners. SUNDERLAND lead the way in the betting, but Jack Ross’ system still doesn’t seem quite right, and there is a significant expectation placed upon them. They seemed unable to take it up another gear in the Play-Off final, and although I expect them to challenge for promotion, I have my doubts about whether they can secure the League One title.

Rotherham losing both Will Vaulks and Semi Ajayi is a significant blow, although they will play with bundles of spirit under Paul Warne. I have my doubts over Darren Ferguson, and although I really like the look of their squad this campaign, I don’t think the Posh have what it takes to finish top of the pile.

Portsmouth could be the side to back in this market with the experienced Kenny Jackett at the helm. They’ve recently lost Jamal Lowe, but they’ve moved quickly to reinvest that money in Marcus Harness. The former Burton man is still developing his game and can play at a higher level. They’ve also added the impressive Sean Raggett on loan whilst James Bolton and Ellis Harrison should both be effective at this level. Losing Matt Clarke is far from ideal, but the aforementioned Raggett and Paul Downing add serious competition in that area.

Portsmouth have a decent squad and a good manager in charge. They were fairly unlucky last season not to go further in the playoffs, but they may be the best option in a fairly unconvincing crop of title contenders.

League Two Winner – Bradford City

It’s no surprise to see BRADFORD CITY installed as favourites for an instant return to League One, and realistically, they have the squad to challenge throughout the course of the campaign. Second favourites Salford have the finance but may need a couple of seasons to adjust to life in the EFL. Mansfield have signed well, but have rookie manager John Dempster in charge, and that would deter me from backing the Stags.

The Bantams have signed James Vaughn and Clayton Donaldson, and as long as the veteran duo can remain fit, they should be able to frequently fire at this level. Eoin Doyle remains at the club for now, and a return to form for the occasionally-lazy frontman would also be a huge tick in the box. Shay McCartan is more than good enough for this level whilst a fit-again Sean Scannell will provide the majority of the ammunition.

At the back, Paudie O’Connor signs permanently, and they’ve finally got rid of the error-prone Nat Knight-Percival. Adam Henley provides plenty of experience and has played at a higher level whilst a couple of exciting unknown quantities arrived over the summer in the shape of Jackson Longridge and Tyler French.

Bradford should never have been relegated, and they have a decent manager in charge. Gary Bowyer has been able to build his squad over the summer, and they should be too good for their rivals this season.
