Blackburn Rovers to beat Hartlepool United

Rovers have started the season impeccably after becoming the only Championship game to win their opening two games. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s men cruised past QPR on the opening day of the season and easily dismantled a sorry Swansea side at the weekend to leave themselves with maximum points from their two games. Coming up against a lower League Two side in Hartlepool, the Dane should see this as a chance to see his backup options star at an expectant Ewood Park; and at 2/5, the Lancashire outfit should progress against the County Durham outfit.  

Middlesbrough to beat Barnsley

Chris Wilder’s men have only picked up one point from two games in the Championship so far this season but will have a chance to win their first game of the season against the Tykes at the Riverside Stadium. Barnsley have had a poor start to the campaign themselves after losing 1-0 at Plymouth on the opening day, and with just one away win in the Championship prior to relegation last year, that should continue against one of the second-tier’s top sides at 4/9 odds.  

Real Madrid to beat Eintracht Frankfurt

Real Madrid won the Champions League in backs-to-the-wall circumstances back in May, beating Liverpool who admittedly dominated Los Blancos in the final in Paris. They will face Frankfurt, who beat Rangers in a penalty shootout in Seville in their Europa League final just days earlier, and so the sides will battle it out in the Super Cup to take the European bragging rights. Carlo Ancelotti’s men have vast continental experience with the club winning five of the last nine Champions League titles available and look set to continue that against the German outfit. And Frankfurt’s relative inexperience should see them fall foul to the Spanish giants at a prices of 4/9.  

Vitoria Guimaraes to beat Hajduk Split

Hajduk are a typically strong European outfit due to their strong showings in the Croatian league meaning that they have qualified for continental competition since 2006, and beat Vitoria 3-1 in the first leg to give themselves a huge chance in Portugal. Bar a shock 2-0 win in a damp squib against Inter Milan in 2012, they have only won seven times away from home since 2009; with those wins coming against minnow opposition. Guimaraes, meanwhile, have produced European scalps in that time with wins over Marseille and draws against Arsenal and Salzburg – and at 11/8, should put the pressure on to try and level the tie on aggregate as a minimum.
