Tottenham handed a huge boost with Borussia Dortmund injury update

Borussia Dortmund predictions

Ahead of welcoming Borrusia Dortmund to Wembley on Wednesday night, Spurs fans will be boosted by the news that German talisman Marco Reus has been ruled out of the Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Picking up a thigh injury in the first half of their Cup defeat against Werder Bremen last week, the Dortmund captain missed Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Hoffenheim.

Along with Lucien Favre being unable to call upon Reus in midweek, it’s unclear if he will return in time for the next league game at Nuremberg in a week.

Marco Reus set to miss Tottenham clash

Although Dortmund hold a five-point buffer at the top of the Bundesliga table, the loss of Reus could not have come at a worse time.

The 37-cap German international has been arguably Die Borussen standout performer this campaign already 13 goals and nine assists in his 19 league appearances.

While the German heavyweights were confident that Reus could make a return for their trip to London, club official Sebastian Kehl has confirmed the 29-year-old will not recover in time.

Speaking on Monday, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told Ruhr Nachrichten:

“We would of course have liked to have him in London, because his presence is a bit intimidating for the opponent. But we’ll compensate for his absence.”

With Reus now sidelined for their trip to Tottenham, Favre and BVB will be looking for 18-year-old Jadon Sancho to fill the void.

Since swapping Manchester City for rural Germany last season, the winger has only gone from strength to strength and has now featured in two of Gareth Southgate’s England squads.

Sancho has undoubtedly been the story of the season for Dortmund so far, topping the Bundesliga’s assist charts with nine while contributing seven goals.

Dortmund’s growing injury list

Along with missing Reus on Wednesday, Dortmund will also be unable to call on another one of their most notable stars.

The visitors will also be without vice-captain Lukasz Piszczek, who picked up a knock in the 5-1 win over Hannover earlier this month.

Although the right-back played in the 3-3 draw with Hoffenheim at the weekend, Ruhr Nachrichten reported that he could miss the trip to Wembley.

Sadly for the former Champions League finalists, their injury list doesn’t stop there.

Despite making his move from Barcelona permanent earlier in the month, striker Paco Alcacer will also be absent due to an on-ongoing shoulder problem.

Dortmund have also confirmed that midfielder Julian Weigl is the latest player to feel the effects of a virus that has spread through their camp this week.

With Favre now unable to call upon a quartet of his biggest stars, should Mauricio Pochettino see Wednesday as the perfect opportunity to pick up an early advantage?
