How the £20 is Paid

Each £5 token must be used on a horse racing market on the day it is credited — it expires at 17:20, which is typically just after the penultimate race on each day’s card. They can be used as one whole bet or split into smaller bets, and must be placed at accumulated odds of 1/1 (2.0) or greater. Free bet stakes are not returned on winning bets.

Important: You must qualify — opt in and place the £10 qualifying bet — before 11:59am on 09.03.2026. You cannot qualify on Champion Day itself. Get this done over the weekend before the Festival starts.
How to Use Your £20 at Cheltenham
With £5 arriving each morning, the best approach is to treat each day’s free bet as a single punt on a race you fancy rather than trying to build a strategy around it.
Target a mid-priced selection in the day’s competitive handicap. At 6/1, a £5 free bet returns £30. At 10/1 it returns £50. The handicaps — Ultima Chase, Coral Cup, County Hurdle, Martin Pipe — are the races where prices open up and you can get proper value from a smaller free bet stake.
Don’t rush to use it immediately. Each day’s free bet is valid until 17:20, which gives you several races after the opening 13:20 to find the right spot. Check the tips first, identify which race you fancy, and deploy accordingly.
Use it on a race you’d have backed anyway. The free bet stake isn’t returned, so the only downside to backing a 12/1 shot is losing the £5 stake you weren’t going to get back regardless. Go for length of odds rather than safety.
