Today’s best each-way bets are our selections priced 8/1 or bigger that run in races paying places — advised each-way, with the place terms shown alongside each one.
Because every selection comes through the model’s value checks, these aren’t random long shots: each has a genuine win chance, and the model’s filters keep the wild outsiders out. Below are today’s each-way bets, followed by how each-way betting works and how to size a stake.

How Our Model Picks the Each-Way Bets
An each-way bet is advised on any of our selections priced 8/1 or bigger in a race that pays places. The model scores every runner at every GB and Irish meeting against the others in its race, across six factors — ability, recent form, suitability, speed, the trainer’s form and improvement angles — to produce a win chance for each horse. From those it flags value picks, where a horse’s price looks bigger than its chance warrants, and the longer-priced value picks that sit in place-paying races are exactly the ones each-way staking suits. Two things keep no-hopers out:
- A real win chance. A selection has to clear a minimum chance to qualify, so a horse with no genuine prospect doesn’t make the page.
- A cap on wild outsiders. The model won’t advise a horse it rates many times more likely than the market does — the filter that removes unrealistic long shots.
Each selection shows the BoyleSports place terms for its race, so you can see exactly how many places pay and at what fraction.
What Is an Each-Way Bet?
An each-way bet is two bets in one — half your stake on the horse to win, half on it to place. Because it’s two bets, the total stake is double your unit stake: a £5 each-way bet costs £10 (£5 win + £5 place). If your horse wins, both parts pay out (the win at full odds, the place at reduced terms). If it finishes in a paid place — second, third, fourth or fifth, depending on the race — only the place part pays.
How Each-Way Place Terms Work
The number of places paid and the fraction of the odds depend on the race type and field size. Here’s the standard structure:
| Field size | Race type | Places paid | Place fraction |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5–7 runners | All races | 1, 2 | 1/4 odds |
| 8+ runners | Non-handicap | 1, 2, 3 | 1/5 odds |
| 8–11 runners | Handicap | 1, 2, 3 | 1/5 odds |
| 12–15 runners | Handicap | 1, 2, 3 | 1/4 odds |
| 16+ runners | Handicap | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 1/4 odds |
| Major festivals | Enhanced | 5+ places | Various |
The takeaway: big-field handicaps (16+ runners) pay four places at 1/4 odds — far more generous than small-field races. Our each-way selections tend to come from races with strong place-term value.
What the “1/4 Odds” Place Fraction Means
The place fraction is how much of the win odds the place part pays. At 1/4 odds, a 10/1 horse pays 2.5/1 on the place part. Worked example:
- £5 each-way on a 10/1 horse = £10 total stake.
- Horse finishes third (a paid place). Win part loses (£5), place part wins at 2.5/1 (£12.50 profit + £5 stake = £17.50 return).
- Net result: £7.50 profit on a £10 stake.
Had it won, the full each-way bet would return £55 (win) + £17.50 (place) = £72.50 on a £10 stake (£62.50 profit).
When to Bet Each-Way vs Win Only
Not every race suits an each-way bet. It works best when:
- The horse is 5/1 or longer. At shorter prices the place part returns too little to justify the doubled stake — our own selections are advised each-way from 8/1 up.
- The field is 8+ runners. Smaller fields pay only two places, cutting the each-way chance. Look for 8+ in non-handicaps and 12+ for big-priced handicap value.
- Big-field handicaps with extra places. Festival meetings often pay four, five or six places — prime each-way territory.
- The form shows it places. A horse with figures like 0-2-3-2 is hitting the places without winning — the kind win-only punters dismiss and each-way punters target.
Each-way suits less well for horses shorter than 4/1, small fields of 5–7 runners (only two places), win-or-bust types that either win or finish nowhere, and 1/5-odds races at shorter prices, where the place return is marginal.

Each-Way Bet Calculator — How Much to Stake
Each-way is two bets, so the total stake is always double the unit stake. Here’s how the costs and returns work at a sample 8/1 price (1/4 place odds):
| Unit stake (e/w) | Total cost | Win return at 8/1 | Place return at 8/1 (1/4) |
|---|---|---|---|
| £1 e/w | £2 | £11 | £4 |
| £2 e/w | £4 | £22 | £8 |
| £5 e/w | £10 | £55 | £20 |
| £10 e/w | £20 | £110 | £40 |
| £20 e/w | £40 | £220 | £80 |
| £25 e/w | £50 | £275 | £100 |
A £5 each-way stake (£10 total) is a sensible standard — meaningful returns at typical 8/1–12/1 prices without committing much to any one bet.
Each-Way Bets at Major Festivals
Extra places and enhanced terms make the festivals the most valuable each-way betting of the year:
- Cheltenham Festival (March) — see our Cheltenham Festival tips hub.
- Grand National at Aintree (April) — most firms pay five places (some six), making it the season’s premier each-way race. See our Grand National tips hub.
- Royal Ascot (June) — extra-place promotions across all firms over the five days.
- Glorious Goodwood (July–August) — regular extra-place markets.
- St Leger Festival (September) — extra places on the featured races.
Each-Way Bet FAQs
What is each-way betting? An each-way bet is two bets combined — half your stake on the horse to win, half on it to place. The places paid and the fraction depend on race type and field size, and the bet costs double the unit stake.
What odds should a horse be for an each-way bet? Our model advises each-way on any selection at 8/1 or bigger in a place-paying race. As a general rule each-way starts to make sense from around 5/1 upwards; below that the place return rarely justifies the doubled stake.
How many places are paid in an each-way bet? 5–7 runners: two places at 1/4. 8+ non-handicaps and 8–11 handicaps: three at 1/5. 12–15 handicaps: three at 1/4. 16+ handicaps: four at 1/4. Festivals often enhance this to five or six places.
What is the difference between 1/4 and 1/5 odds? The place fraction is how much of the win odds the place part pays. 1/4 is more generous: a 10/1 horse pays 2.5/1 on the place at 1/4, versus 2/1 at 1/5. Favour 1/4-odds races where you can, especially big-field handicaps.
Is each-way better than win-only? Each-way is better for longer-priced horses (8/1+) in bigger fields (8+ runners). Win-only is better for short-priced favourites (under 4/1) and for any horse in a small field of 5–7 runners, where only two places pay.
What is an extra-place each-way bet? An extra-place promotion pays out on an additional place beyond the standard terms — for example four places instead of three in an 8-runner handicap. It improves each-way value and is common at festivals and on featured races.
Can I cash out an each-way bet? Yes — most major UK bookmakers offer cash-out on each-way bets, with a value that reflects current odds and your bet’s position in running.
Can I bet each-way on the Grand National? Yes — it’s the premier each-way race of the year. Most firms pay five places at 1/4 odds (some six), the most generous each-way terms in UK betting. See our Grand National tips hub.
Where can I find tomorrow’s each-way tips? Tomorrow’s each-way selections are published once the racecards are confirmed, typically from around 6pm the evening before.
Are the each-way tips free? Yes — every each-way selection is free to view with no subscription. We’re funded through bookmaker affiliate partnerships.
