Championship Tips

Championship tips

Our free Championship tips cover every EFL matchday – best bets, bet builders and accumulators for the biggest second-tier fixtures, each backed by the stats. Every selection on this page carries two numbers: our probability and the market’s. That comparison is the whole method, and it is the only reason to read us rather than anyone else.

Every betting price is a probability in disguise. A shot at 8/11 is the bookmaker saying 58%; a goalscorer at 10/3 is the bookmaker saying 23%. We work out the same number independently and publish both, so you can see exactly where we disagree with the market and by how much.

Our figure comes from the player’s own record rather than from opinion. For a shots or goalscorer line we count how often he has cleared it in his last six matches and check the rate per 90 minutes behind it. For a team market we use both sides’ last 20 matches. Where a rate comes off a small sample we pull it towards a positional baseline before quoting it, because four goals in 266 minutes is a hot streak rather than a rate.

A selection needs three things to appear here. A 40% chance or better on our figure, because a large edge on a 20% shot is a lottery ticket rather than a bet. A price of 4/6 or longer, so the return justifies the risk. And a gap to the market of no more than 20 points — the bookmaker is usually right, and when our number sits far above theirs the likelier explanation is that ours is wrong.

That last rule is why some fixtures appear here with nothing. We publish the blanks too, in the section below the selections, along with the markets we considered and rejected. A round where four of 11 fixtures produce no bet is a result rather than an oversight.

Prices are checked on the morning of the round and change. Where no referee has been appointed we use a league-average official of 4.20 cards a game, the mean across the 25 referees we have measured, and say so on the selection.

Fourteen of our 23 selections sit between 8 and 20 points clear of the price. The other nine are still on this page — they are in the block above with everything else — but a 2 or 3 point edge sits inside the bookmaker’s margin rather than beyond it, and calling that a disagreement would be stretching the word.

A market percentage always includes the bookmaker’s cut, which on these markets runs around 5%. That is why the table starts at 8 rather than at 1: below that, our number and the price are saying the same thing.

What We Are Leaving Out, and Why

Sheffield United vs Norwich — nothing, for the second week running. Their matches average 4.40 cards between them, which on our figures makes four or more a 62% shot against a price implying 33% at 2/1. That is a 29-point gap and we do not publish those. When our number sits that far above the bookmaker’s the likelier explanation is that ours is wrong, and we have seen the same unexplained shape in League One card markets this week.

André Brooks at 7/2 to score and 2/1 for two or more shots. He looked the strongest selection on the whole card. 294 minutes across 4 appearances is not a sample we will publish a rate from, however good the record looks.

Will Lankshear at 13/8 for Middlesbrough. 353 minutes, same reason.

Mateus Mané 3+ shots for Wolves at 6/4. His last 6 read 5, 4, 4, 2, 4, 2 — four of six at that line, which is 67% against a price implying 40%. A 27-point gap, past our cap, and left out for the same reason as the Sheffield United cards.

Two Kinds of Selection on This Page

Fourteen of the 23 are value selections, where our probability beats the market’s by 8 points or more. Those are the bets we think are mispriced, and they average a gap of nearly 12 points.

Nine are not. They average 5 points clear of the price, which is inside the margin rather than beyond it — Millwall vs Bolton both teams to score is level at 55% against 55%, and the two Birmingham vs Wolves legs beat the price by 2 and 3. They are here because they are the likeliest outcomes we could find in fixtures where nothing cleared the value bar, and a page that goes silent on a match is less useful than one that says what is most likely to happen.

Both numbers are on every selection, so the distinction is visible without a label. Where our figure is barely above the market’s, that is what the two columns are telling you.

Two selections sit exactly on our 20-point cap — Burnley vs Bristol City under 9.5 corners and QPR vs Middlesbrough over 9.5 corners. Both are published and both are named here. The Championship corners market prices nearly the same expectation on every fixture while the sides’ own records vary by more than four corners a game, so those gaps come from our number moving rather than the bookmaker’s.

How We Pick Our Championship Tips

The Championship is the most unpredictable league in English football, so we build every tip from the numbers rather than reputation — form, expected goals, shots, cards and confirmed team news, weighted for each fixture. Promoted sides, relegated Premier League clubs and mid-table dark horses all get treated on their current data, not last season’s. The full reasoning behind each call is in the match previews linked throughout this page.

With 12 games most Saturdays, the Championship is made for accumulators. We pick out the best-value selections across the day’s fixtures for our football accumulator tips, including Championship-only accas across the 3pm kick-offs.
