Boylesports designate selected races each day as Extra Place races, paying one additional place beyond the standard each-way terms. A race that would normally pay three places pays four. A race that would normally pay four places pays five. In fields of 20 or more, Boylesports pay six places. All extra places are paid at 1/5 odds.
This is an ongoing daily promotion running across UK and Irish racing year-round — not a festival-specific offer. On any given racing day, a selection of races across the card will be flagged as Extra Place races, and the enhanced terms apply automatically to any qualifying each-way bet placed on those races.

How the Boylesports Extra Place Races Offer Works
Standard each-way terms in horse racing pay a fraction of the win odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5) for finishing in the top two, three, four or five places, depending on the size of the field. Under the Boylesports Extra Place Races promotion, the number of places paid is increased by one beyond the standard, and all place returns are settled at 1/5 odds regardless of the race.
The number of extra places available scales with field size:
| Runners in Race | Standard Places | Boylesports Extra Places | Place Odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12–15 runners | 3 places | 4 places | 1/5 |
| 16–19 runners | 4 places | 5 places | 1/5 |
| 20+ runners | 5 places | 6 places | 1/5 |
Worked example: You place a £10 each-way bet on a 14/1 shot in a 16-runner handicap hurdle. Standard terms would pay four places at 1/4 odds — meaning the place return on a 14/1 winner finishing third would be 14/4 = 3.5/1. Under Boylesports Extra Places, the race pays five places at 1/5 odds — meaning a horse finishing fifth pays 14/5 = 2.8/1 on your £10 place stake, returning £38 (£28 profit + £10 stake). Without extra places, fifth place pays nothing.
The extra place is the difference between a winning each-way bet and a losing one for any horse that finishes in that additional place. On a £10 each-way bet at 14/1 in a 16-runner race, the difference between four places and five places is £38 in your pocket versus £0 from the place part.

Boylesports Extra Places at the Cheltenham Festival
The Cheltenham Festival is where the Boylesports Extra Place Races promotion is most valuable. Across the four days of the Festival — Tuesday 10th to Friday 13th March 2026 — the majority of races are large-field handicaps or competitive graded contests where the difference between finishing fourth, fifth or sixth is the difference between a return and nothing.
In past Festival years, Boylesports have designated most of the big handicap races as Extra Place races, paying five and six places in the largest fields. The races where extra places have the most practical impact at Cheltenham:
Large-field handicaps (20+ runners expected): The Coral Cup, the County Hurdle, the Kim Muir, the Ultima, the Plate and the Grand Annual regularly attract fields of 20 or more runners. In these races, Boylesports paying six places means your each-way selection is covered well into the mid-field — a horse finishing fifth or sixth in a 24-runner handicap pays the place part of your each-way stake in full.
Grade 1 races with 12–16 runners: Championship races typically run with 10–16 declared runners. In a 12-runner Champion Hurdle, standard terms pay three places — Boylesports paying four means the fourth-placed horse, which in a compressed Grade 1 finish could be beaten by less than a length, earns a place return.
Check the Boylesports promotions page on the morning of each Festival day to confirm which races are Extra Place races and how many places are being paid. For our race-by-race selections across all four days, see our Cheltenham Festival tips.
Combining Extra Places with Best Odds Guaranteed
The Boylesports Extra Place Races offer combines naturally with their Best Odds Guaranteed promotion. On a qualifying race where both apply simultaneously — a race designated as an Extra Place race on which you have placed an each-way bet from 8am on race day — you receive both benefits:
- More places covered — your each-way bet pays on the extra place if your horse runs into it
- Better place odds — if the SP on race day is bigger than the price you took at 8am, BOG means you are paid at the higher SP on both the win and place parts
On a large-field handicap at a major festival, where prices move significantly in the morning and fields are large enough to trigger the 5 or 6-place terms, having both features active simultaneously is a genuine advantage that is hard to replicate at bookmakers who offer one but not the other.
Boylesports Extra Places vs Competitors
Extra place promotions are common at major UK bookmakers, but the terms vary — particularly around how many places are paid and at what odds fraction. Boylesports pay all extra places at 1/5 odds rather than 1/4, which is the more common fraction at other bookmakers. On a short-priced runner, 1/5 is slightly less valuable than 1/4 — but on longer-priced selections at 10/1 or more, the difference between 1/4 and 1/5 of the win odds is small relative to the value of the extra place itself.
The key variable is how many places are being paid on any given race. On a 20-runner race, Boylesports paying six places versus a competitor paying five is a meaningful difference in coverage — particularly for each-way punters backing horses at 10/1 or bigger who are hoping for a placed run rather than a win.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to opt in to Boylesports Extra Places?
No. The enhanced terms apply automatically to qualifying each-way bets on designated races. You will see the extra place terms displayed in the betslip when you navigate to a qualifying race — no separate action is required.
Are extra places available every day?
Yes. Boylesports designate Extra Place races across UK and Irish racing daily. The specific qualifying races vary each day and are listed on the Boylesports promotions page. Check the morning of any racing day to see which races are covered.
Do extra places apply to each-way accumulators?
No. Extra place terms do not apply to Place Accumulators. The offer applies to each-way singles on designated races only.
What odds fraction are the extra places paid at?
All extra places at Boylesports are paid at 1/5 odds, regardless of the race or field size.
What happens if there is a non-runner and the field drops below the threshold?
If a non-runner reduces the field size below the threshold for a particular extra place tier — for example, a race drops from 17 runners to 15 after a late withdrawal, moving it from the 5-place to the 4-place tier — the terms are adjusted to reflect the revised field. The extra place terms that apply are based on the number of declared runners at the time of the race, after any non-runners have been removed.
Does the offer apply to Cheltenham ante-post bets?
No. Extra place terms apply to day-of-race each-way bets only. Ante-post bets are not eligible for the extra place promotion.
Can I use a free bet for an extra place race?
No. Free bets, cashed out bets and voided bets do not qualify for the Extra Place Races promotion.
