The Opta supercomputer makes West Ham the favourites to win the 2026/27 Championship and go up, while Stoke City are its most likely team to be relegated — after simulating the season 10,000 times.
Below are the full promotion and relegation projections from Opta’s model, published on 11 August 2026, with each club’s chances broken down and explained.

| Projection | Club (Opta probability) |

| Title favourites | West Ham (17.2%) |
| Most likely to go up automatically | West Ham (29.4%) |
| Most likely to be relegated | Stoke City (31.1%) |

Championship Promotion Predictions 2026/27
The three sides relegated from the Premier League last season dominate the top of Opta’s promotion projections. West Ham lead the way, with Southampton, Middlesbrough, Wolves and Burnley all among the frontrunners for a top-two finish. Here are the automatic-promotion chances from Opta’s model:
| Club | Opta Automatic Promotion Chance |
|---|---|
| West Ham | 29.4% |
| Southampton | 23.7% |
| Middlesbrough | 21.0% |
| Wolves | 19.2% |
| Millwall | 13.8% |
| Burnley | 13.5% |
| Norwich City | 11.8% |
| Sheffield United | 8.7% |
| Birmingham City | 7.2% |

West Ham the favourites. Back in the second tier for the first time in 14 years, West Ham are Opta’s clear pick for both the title and a top-two finish. The last time the Hammers were in the Championship, in 2011-12, they went straight back up — though they needed the play-offs to do it.
Southampton despite a points deduction. Saints begin the campaign on minus four points, yet Opta’s model still rates their automatic-promotion chances highly. Head coach Tonda Eckert stays in post after a strong end to last season.
Middlesbrough and Wolves close behind. Middlesbrough have been perennial contenders, reaching the play-offs twice in the last four seasons. Wolves, relegated from the Premier League bottom, start under new boss César Peixoto and have re-signed Raúl Jiménez — one of the stronger strikers at this level — to spearhead a promotion push.
Burnley and Millwall in the mix. Burnley have twice bounced straight back from Premier League relegation with 100-point promotion seasons, now under new manager Nicky Hayen. Millwall, play-off semi-finalists last season, are again projected to challenge near the top.
The New Eight-Team Play-Off Format
A major change for 2026/27 is the expanded play-offs. After 37 years of a four-team system for clubs finishing third to sixth, qualification now extends down to eighth place. Fifth will face eighth and sixth will face seventh in an extra eliminator round, with the winners progressing to face the third and fourth-placed sides in the semi-finals.
The effect, per Opta’s projections, is that more clubs now have something to play for. Derby County’s chances of a play-off place, for example, rise by around ten percentage points under the new format (to 35.9%), and Wrexham see a similar jump. Opta’s simulations had 16 of the 24 clubs finishing inside the top eight in at least 22% of runs — underlining how open the division is.
Championship Relegation Predictions 2026/27
At the other end, Opta’s model points to a cluster of clubs at risk. Stoke City are the most likely to go down after a poor second half of last season, with Charlton, Watford and Preston also in danger. Here are the relegation chances from Opta’s model:
| Club | Opta Relegation Chance |
|---|---|
| Stoke City | 31.1% |
| Charlton Athletic | 26.2% |
| Watford | 25.3% |
| Preston North End | 25.0% |
| Bolton Wanderers | 23.1% |
| Cardiff City | 22.8% |
| Lincoln City | 14.0% |

Stoke the most vulnerable. Opta’s model makes Stoke the likeliest to be relegated, reflecting a dismal run of form across the back end of last season.
Watford and Preston flagged. Watford’s collapse in the second half of last season — one of the poorest points returns in the division after New Year — drives their projection, compounded by another summer of upheaval. Preston, despite finishing 14th, sat in the relegation zone of Opta’s expected-points table, suggesting their underlying numbers were weaker than their final position.
The promoted sides. Of the three sides up from League One, Opta rates Bolton the most likely to go straight back down, ahead of Cardiff, with Lincoln — back in the second tier for the first time since 1961 — given a lower relegation chance.
How the Opta Supercomputer Works
Opta’s League Prediction model estimates how likely each club is to finish in every possible league position. It works out the probability of each match result using betting-market odds and Opta’s own Power Rankings — both based on historical and recent team performances — then simulates the remaining fixtures thousands of times. Averaging how often each club finishes in each position across all those simulations produces the projections. The figures reflect what the model knows now and will shift throughout the season as real results come in.
