While Mo Salah laps up plaudits up and down the country for defying his doubters and proving every bit as lethal in front of goal this year as he was last, there’s a criminal temptation to overlook the contributions of a man who has been just as influential in his side’s remarkable title run.
I am of course talking about Sadio Mane, who, like Salah, could still feasibly end the campaign as the Premier League’s top goalscorer – something that would have seemed almost unimaginable back in August.
The Senegalese speed merchant has bagged 18 goals in his 32 outings this season, getting him a place in the PFA Team of the Year, and looks nailed on to break the 20-goal barrier in the league for the first time in his professional career. He’s 4/5 to bag at anytime against Huddersfield and while I concede there could well be players lining up to stick chances away here, I’m confident one or two opportunities will find themselves at Mane’s feet.
Make no mistake, when you’re looking to put pressure on Manchester City and secure three points before the weekend even kicks off, there’s probably not an easier fixture than Huddersfield at home. The only contention to that claim could be that the visitors can play without the pressure of possible relegation on their shoulders as this was confirmed a little while ago.
Regardless, City’s win over rivals Manchester United in midweek means that Liverpool simply cannot afford any slip-ups if they are to end a three decade wait for a league championship.
The fact that the Reds are about the 1/16 mark to sew up all three points gives a good indication of how most bookies see this one going – and I’m certainly no different. I think we can do a little better than that though, and have cast my eye over the handicap market. You can get 8/11 on the hosts winning by three goals or more and although not the longest price, looks a half decent odds-on shot given that Huddersfield have triumphed in just one game since the New Year.
I’ll make no bones about it – I give Huddersfield absolutely no hope here. Perhaps the one bright spark in an otherwise disappointing campaign has been the emergence of Karlan Grant. The ex-Charlton striker joined in January and has proved more than capable of mixing it with the country’s elite while becoming his club’s top scorer to boot.
The visitors have lost seven on the bounce and barring an absolute meltdown from Liverpool, that crushing trend looks almost certain to continue.
I can see Klopp’s men showing the kind of ruthlessness you frankly need if you’re to have any hope of landing a Premier League crown, which would very much be welcomed by Kopites. You’ll get 7/1 on the hosts winning this 4-0 and while I’ll admit it’s probably not as lengthy a price as we’re used to seeing for such a scoreline, that’s down to the genuine likelihood that this one ends in a rout.
Liverpool to win – 1/14
Draw – 14/1
Huddersfield to win – 30/1
