The quick turnaround won’t help Liverpool players still recovering from their midweek runout. Most notably, Fabinho suffered with cramp in the latter stages of extra time. Nevertheless, we expect Liverpool to have fully recovered in time to beat Southampton.
Mané scored twice on Wednesday and his home form was particularly impressive at the tail end of last season. Against a porous Southampton defence, we expect the Senegalese forward to have plenty of chances. Mané to score is priced at 6/5.
Expect goals in this encounter. Liverpool’s first choice attack should be able to start this game for the first time this season and we expect all three to be heavily involved. With added the chance of Southampton breaching the Liverpool backline, we’re backing over 3.5 goals at 29/20.
Liverpool started the season with a comfortable win against Norwich at Anfield. The Reds’ defence looked shaky at times and were breached by Teemu Pukki in the second half. Despite this, Liverpool dominated after netting four times in the first half.
Their midweek trip to Instanbul, again, exposed defensive issues. Chelsea were able to get in behind the defensive line on a number of occasions. The Blues took the lead through a well-timed run from Olivier Giroud, casting further doubt over Liverpool’s early defensive resilience. The introduction of Roberto Firmino galvanised The Reds and underlined his importance, as he assisted both goals en route to a penalty shootout win.
Southampton had an opening weekend to forget away at Burnley. They were breached three times by The Clarets and looked a little off the pace. The Saints could have taken the lead but were uncharacteristically wasteful under Ralph Hassenhuttl. If Southampton fail to tighten up, Liverpool could run riot.
